Tidewater Community College 2013-2014 Nursing

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I would like to start a new thread for all the nursing students who got accepted into the Tidewater Community College Beazley School of Nursing 2013-2014. I will be starting in the August cohort and would like to meet some of my future class mates. If you are in another cohort, please add to the thread and we can all share information. Best of luck to everyone who will be nursing students this fall and spring!

I am finishing up this fall with my pre-reqs and plan on taking my exam and then applying to the program in the spring to begin in the fall. I had a question for those of you who were accepted already. If you don't mind answering, how well did you do on the HESI exam? Was it very difficult in your opinion and were there a lot of the science questions? Science is definitely not my strong point, but hopefully this fall I will become a little clearer on some it as I'll be taking Micro and APII. Also, did you get in for the very first semester after applying, or did it take a couple semesters for you to finally get accepted? Just wanting to get an idea of just how competitive it will be for me and how good of a chance I may have when I apply, considering I don't do too bad on my exam. Right now I have a 3.66 GPA, and hopefully after this semester and next I can get all A's and get it up to at least the 3.7's.

Thanks for any info you have!!

meloda07, who is your professor for Micro? Has it been very difficult so far? I will be taking it with Professor ***** at Norfolk campus in the fall. And will be taking APII with Professor **** at Chesapeake campus as well.

I have 2 different ladies at Norfolk campus C J for lab and K P for lecture I like my lab its very interesting but lecture is so boring.

Oops didn't realize we couldn't post names, sorry. Yea that would be M M for AP2 at Ches and M T for Micro at Norfolk.

Does anyone know if you can reapply to the program back to back? I was thinking of applying for the spring start but if that doesn't work out, can I apply for the next fall start?

Hi evyvis91!

I can't tell you for certain, but I believe you'd need to wait to know if you were accepted into the Spring start before applying for the Fall program. You can call the nursing department to find out for sure.

Hope that helps!

At our info session they said you can apply back to back since the application period is feb to mar and then aug to sept so you can reapply. The only thing is if you want them to reuse your application to resubmit it (if nothing changes) you just let them know and they will look at it again (no special treatment though)

Ok thanks y'all! I spoke with the recruiter myself & she said the samething. Only thing is that I can only take the Hesi once a year so if I fail it, then I'm out of luck for 1 whole year. She also said if I feel that if I'm not as competitive, then I should retake some prereqs so I can apply for the fall start instead of spring. As of now my prereq gpa is a 3.29 with only bio 141 & 150. I know the program is competitive but is it a lot more competitive for the spring start? Should I study my butt off for this hesi & pray that my score balances out with my 3.29? Also, can sdv100 replace 101?

Each of the start dates is equally competitive. If I'm reading correctly, you need Bio 142...are you planning on taking that before you start the nursing program? If so, that would probably help out your gpa and allow you to commit more time to the program...

Well I'm taking bio142 this fall, I was told u can apply with 2 out of the 3 sciences. But I guess it would do me a lot better to just wait and apply for the fall start.

You could try it: I had classmates that got in and ended up taking microbiology over the summer session during the nursing program. Don't know if it will affect your chances of admission though.

I agree with Meriwhen. Just know it is TOUGH to do a class, especially one with a lab at the same time you're in this program. Clinicals aren't held on the same days throughout the program...so if you had clinical on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the day in one class, you could end up having clinicals on Tuesdays or Thursdays in the evenings or on Saturdays. NOT trying to scare you in any way--I just know from experience it's best to have information going in, rather than to get that information when you're in the program. I had a classmate who planned on taking 142 while in the nursing program (she was accepted with 2/3 sciences). Due to the rigor of the program schedule, she wasn't able to do that. She was told the week before pinning that she would not pin with us and wouldn't have that opportunity until December. At which point she isn't eligible to take the state boards until January at the earliest. (It is always, always better to take the boards asap after graduation...that way you don't lose too much information in the gap). I can only tell you what I would do, but honestly, if you can, get the sciences out of the way before going into the program. I know it means longer that you aren't actually in nursing school, but the benefits FAR outweigh the risks. If it helps, most of us in my cohort studied somewhere around 3-4 hours a day minimum for any class we were in, in addition to doing papers, projects, and reading for the next class. If you can manage that and take a science on top of it, then you're in good shape and I say go for it. Best of luck to you. I know you'll be great!!
