Tidewater Community College 2013-2014 Nursing

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I would like to start a new thread for all the nursing students who got accepted into the Tidewater Community College Beazley School of Nursing 2013-2014. I will be starting in the August cohort and would like to meet some of my future class mates. If you are in another cohort, please add to the thread and we can all share information. Best of luck to everyone who will be nursing students this fall and spring!

Regina,

Hi! Ok, in 108 class is held from 8-2 Monday through Thursday. The "lab" section is the part of the class where you learn nursing fundamentals...dressing changes, wound irrigation, ng tube insertion, and such. It's held in the labs right next door to the classroom (they connect with sliding glass doors). You'll get 1/2 and hour for lunch each day. You can expect some instruction everyday including the "lab" days. The last three weeks of class, you'll start your clinicals at a facility in Hampton Roads and usually in 108 they're six hour clinicals on Tuesday and/or Thursday. Hope that helps!

Oh great! Thank you 2Sugars for your response, it really cleared up some questions I had about the program. I am so anxious to start! I've been preparing and waiting for this for a long time now. Thanks again for your insights!

I am currently in the nursing program, and also a representative on the Student Nurse Association at Tidewater Community College. Are you guys members of the Student Nurse Association?

2brn14, I am not a member of the Student Nurse Association yet. What do you need to do in order to become a member?

Thanks,

Regina

Thanks and we look forward to meeting all of you.

Hey everyone! I am in cohort 2 (October start)! :) Couple of questions...when do we actually register for classes? What kind of shoes...(all white sneakers...etc). The books recommended for NUR 108, are they all actually needed...just trying to get stuff slowly since I am paying for all this out of pocket. Thanks for all your help!

Spicersweeney,

I think we will find out those answers when we go to the meeting on July 15th. I have placed my selected classes in my shopping cart so that I can just go in and enroll when the time comes. Good luck to you!!! Someone recommended getting Dansko shoes.

2Sugars Congrats!!! Just a couple of questions for you if you don't mind...1. Are all white sneakers ok? Dansko's actually hurt my feet (odd I know) 2. Which stethoscope would you recommend? 3. Is buying books other than at the book store ok as long as the ISBN numbers match? 4. What do the uniforms look like? 5. What can we wear to class on regular days? Thanks soooo much!

Hi! So I just wrote a reply and it disappeared. If it shows up twice, please look over it! :)

Spicersweeney, here you go!

You can definitely have all white sneakers. That's what required, so you're set!

I have a Littman II that I love, but know that you don't need something that pricey right away. A good $25 one will do just fine. Just make sure it have both the bell and the diaphragm so you can pick up all those good heart sounds you have to identify. ;)

You can absolutely buy your books at another location or website. I didn't buy one book from school. I used online retailers and had no problem. I just made sure I had the correct ISBN number and that worked fine.

The uniforms consist of white scrub pants and blue polo shirts. You order both through the bookstore at orientation. You also have the option of purchasing the matching white vest or lab coat for clinical. Some people loved theirs and wore them all the time...I never wore mine. On chilly days I just wore a long sleeved solid t shirt under my shirt and that worked well.

On class days you can just wear whatever you like. :)

You'll definitely need all the books for 108 that are recommended. You won't use all of them as much as others, but you'll absolutely use them all. You also use them in your other classes so that helps...no using them one class and then feeling like you didn't get your money's worth...you will use them!

Hope that helps!!

Thank you soooooo much!

Is anyone applying this next round, aug-sept? Also, any tips on what materials to use to study for the hesi? I'm not too good with standardized tests so I'm looking for any good tips! Hope to meet some people who are applying!

I was thinking about applying but I'm not sure if my gpa would be strong enough to apply. I asked the nursing recruiter if I can apply for the spring start & for next fall start but she said i'd have to write a letter or something since my app of the spring start would still be on file. She didn't give me enough info.

Good morning everyone, I don't know if anyone else has tried to register for classes yet and could not. I called yesterday to address this concern and here is what I found out. Once we attend the mandatory meeting on July 15, we will fill out change of major forms. This will allow the administration department to change each of our majors from pre-nursing to Nursing majors. Once that is taken care of (usually about 1 week) then we will be able to register for our classes. I hope everyone is enjoying this little break before we start our first nursing courses this August! See you all on July 15th!

Regina

Good luck to everyone. I'm taking micro now and then A&P2 in the fall then applying in Feb-Mar. So nervous about Micro my A is slipping away from me slowly.
