What would the ER staff do with a patient who had threatened suicide? By this, I mean verbal only, but as soon as they enter the ER , they claim they didn't mean it.

I'm asking this question about something that happened two years ago.

at the ER where I work they get a psych eval no matter if they meant it or not

Crisis counselor gets called in, can't leave until cleared by them and sign a no self harm contract. If there is any alcohol or other stuff involved, 24 mental health hold until sober and cleared by crisis.

Ok, so what are the criteria that must be met for them to leave the hospital?

What if the person has a personality disorder?

anytime someone is claiming to be suicidal they get an immediate psych eval and one-on-one time with a sitter until cleared by psych.....big PIA when you've only got so many CNAs to go around.....

At our place, because we don't have psych, it means an automatic 5150 hold and transfer to a psych facility for eval.

Psych is called, security is on standby, and they get a sitter. After being medically cleared by the physician, they're usually sent to the psych holding area. Only, no one likes getting undressed--especially younger, angry individuals. We usually have to strip them. It's not fun.
