Thoughts on Maric College?

Published

Hi

I threw my story out on another thread. I'm just finishing up 20 years in the Navy most of it was in Naval Special Warfare where I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to cross-train as a medic. As I was looking for a 2nd career I kept saying things like "I can do this, or I can do that." I finally came to realize that what I "wanted" to do was be an RN. It's a good way to take some of the lessons that I really didnt want to learn working for "Uncle Sucker" and put them to good use helping someone else.

but I digress

I'm starting my classwork as best I can prior to my actual retirement date but I'm getting a little frustrated when the people at the college I'm going to keep telling me how it'll be at least 2 years from the time I finish my pre-req stuff (A&P, chem & microbiology) before I can get into the "core" ADN program. In some things I can show quite a bit of patience, in things like this, not so much.

I'm posting because Maric College is boasting that they have no waiting list, and a better than 85% pass rate on NCLEX-RN. I just keep getting a intermittant alarm going off when I talk to anyone there. It has that slight scent of diploma mill. Not that I have anything against a diploma mill but will the diploma that I get from there do anything for me in the future if I decide to trade up to a BSN? Most importantly is the training that you get from there up to speed?

Just curious if anyone has any experiance with Maric?

Thanks in advance

Jim

It's not so much a waiting list as a filter screen, I think. To get into the RN program you need medical experience (I'm an EMTand I was a special warfare medic in the Navy). The big thing for them is the test score. The higher you score, the quicker you get in. Right now I'm sweating it a little (still no word) because I lost a couple of points on my essay I wrote. What they tell me is that if I dont start this month I'm in for sure next go around.

I appreciate all the worries and advice from everyone. When I started this thread I never expected it to be so heated. You mention Maric and people are either ok with it or it's like Satan's school for nurses. You hear all of these stories about bad training poor teachers and everything right up to and touching animal sacrifice about this place. None of the people that I know of had any of that to deal with. It is true that there are a lot of schools that do not take Maric's credits if you bridge up. National will, along with a couple others that they had to disclose to me when I enrolled and paid my fees. For me that's immaterial. This is a second career for me. I've been the boss, and I'm really ok with not being the boss anymore. In the 21 years I spent in the Navy, most in Special Warfare I've checked all my "ego boxes" . My goal is to get my license and work 2 12's a week in someone's ER. The rest of my time I'll spend surfing and goofing off with my wife and daughter. When the list comes out, I'll post the results. Word I get is we'll know by close of business thursday at the latest who starts this month.

Sorry, I missed your other question. The cost of housing in SD is high. Actually it's really really high. Pick up a copy of the SD paper and take a look at the rentals to get an idea. The SD Reader is another good source and you can access them online for free I'm pretty sure.

i am going on 2nd hand information but want you to know of my friend's experience with maric. she lasted only about three months in their lvn program, then quit. she said "most of the class and teachers are from the phillipines, they are given priority for tasks and extra encouragement over people who don't speak their language". she mentioned the teachers would say catch phrases in tagalog during classroom lecture leaving those who don't understand the language in the dark. there might be more than one location for maric but honestly this was her experience.

hi kitten,

thanks for the feedback!

actually i was inspired to have a change of heart about attending maric college. i'm waiting for a reply to my fax i sent the calif. bon about the nursing program curriculum at the robert ross international university of nursing if it meets all of ca's requirements (www.iuon.org/video, allnurses.com "nurses news" forum: international nursing school opens).

It's official. I'm in!! Orientation is the 27th with the first day of classes on the 30th of this month. With the credits that I brought to the table, I was able to knock out an entire quarter.

Now all I have left to do is everything.

Hi, I am about to start at maric in the lvn program. I will be taking the night classes. Night classes are 60 weeks and from 5:00pm - 10:30 pm. I hope this info helps you

Hi

I'm with you hopefully I'll be out of the Nav in Sept. I havent gone over there yet, but I have had a couple long phone calls with them. I just ran into another surfing buddy of mine who just finished up his LVN at Maric. From his experiance they dont like to accept credit from anyone else. Which makes sense. They're in the business of "selling " you classes at their school. He said that the training was great and he's taking NCLEX-LPN in a month or so feeling about as confident as anyone else. The one thing that keeps coming up (and the big sticking point for me) is this place is expensive! Also it's Monday to Friday 8-4. If you're looking for a program that you can still have a job in, unless you're going to go to school in the day and work at night Maric may not be for you. They really dont have any other schedule. There are a couple really good scholarship programs out there that will pick up the tab, but like any scholarship there's no guarantee that you'll get it. Right now I'm sticking with SD City college and keeping all of my options open right down to the wire. I may end up at Maric, time will tell. Good luck in whatever you decide. If I find out anything more I'll post it.

Maric charges in the vicinity of $60K for their RN program and over $30K for their LVN program.

Hello! I am sort of in the same boat myself and am considering Maric! I am a recent graduate from UCI with a BA in economics (I know, RANDOM) and decided to take an alternative path.

I actually went in to speak with Maric, and they told me that they have a 93% passing rate for the N-CLEX (not sure if I spelled that right)

also, they told me it was approximately $45,000 for the RN program.

I am currently working on accelerated nursing pre-req's here at UCI's summer session and it is pretty intense. Saddleback college has just abolished it's waiting list so I am trying to get into that, but I am pretty antsey on starting already so Maric does sound quite appealing at the moment... however you have to have about 2 months of nursing experience which I believe you already have. I however must get a CNA license and work for two months before I can actually get into theur RN program.

Another thing-you have to take a Reading, Writing, and Math test-don't worry it's not hard. I scored well over the required for the RN program. I mean it's really basic. I just encourage you to review your multiplecation tables because it's been awhile since I have done them haha but I still did fine.

My mother is an RN at Kaiser Permanente in San diego and she said there are many Rn's there that came from Maric... she said it doesn't matter where you get your associates!

Hope this helps! let me know if it does!

The tuition is between 42-45K. but that goes down based on what credits that you bring to the table from other colleges. I was down below 40 (by a couple cents:lol2: ) when they finally priced me out. You dont need " 2 months nursing exp.) you just need some sort of medical background. Lots of CNAs, EMTs, LVNs. You just need something. They LOVE people with no background so that they can sell you into the CNA course first. I'd recommend going to City College or somewhere inexpensive and getting your EMT-B. It'll work just as well and save a ton of money.

Good luck

MY gosh its gone up that much??/ I graduated there in Jan 2004 and when I went the average was under 30K for the entire thing. (I choose there because of the time and being a newly single full time I didn't have the luxury of going anywhere with waiting lists and finishing my pre-reqs. One of the bad things is to get my BSN I can't go to SDSU or many other state programs without retaking my A&P II and micro. Maric's credits in most cases are not transferable.

Hello,

I've done my study on Maric and would like to know any opinions on the BSN program at National. The recruiter at National told me there were no longer running the adn program and just offering the BSN program. So im currently looking into enrolling, but once again am ended up with the old question, which is better a BSN OR ADN degree..

Would like to hear anybody's experience in the program at NAtional positive/negative or would i be better off at a comm. college w/ no waiting list.

Thanks!
