Thoughts on Maric College?

U.S.A. California

Hi

I threw my story out on another thread. I'm just finishing up 20 years in the Navy most of it was in Naval Special Warfare where I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to cross-train as a medic. As I was looking for a 2nd career I kept saying things like "I can do this, or I can do that." I finally came to realize that what I "wanted" to do was be an RN. It's a good way to take some of the lessons that I really didnt want to learn working for "Uncle Sucker" and put them to good use helping someone else.

but I digress

I'm starting my classwork as best I can prior to my actual retirement date but I'm getting a little frustrated when the people at the college I'm going to keep telling me how it'll be at least 2 years from the time I finish my pre-req stuff (A&P, chem & microbiology) before I can get into the "core" ADN program. In some things I can show quite a bit of patience, in things like this, not so much.

I'm posting because Maric College is boasting that they have no waiting list, and a better than 85% pass rate on NCLEX-RN. I just keep getting a intermittant alarm going off when I talk to anyone there. It has that slight scent of diploma mill. Not that I have anything against a diploma mill but will the diploma that I get from there do anything for me in the future if I decide to trade up to a BSN? Most importantly is the training that you get from there up to speed?

Just curious if anyone has any experiance with Maric?

Thanks in advance

Jim

I am an LVN Student at Maric. My LVN credits will transfer, however RN credits will not.

LVN runs about $22,800 and I here that RN runs about $35,000

I like the program, it is extremely LOADED with ALOT of info but if you keep up you shouldn't have a problem.

I know a lot of students that plan to do "step up" at other colleges.

Specializes in NICU.

Is it really only $35K-ish for the RN program? My friend is in the LVN program too and I thought she said it was $60K-ish for the RN.

And are you referring to the LVN-RN step up is $35K or is $35K starting from scratch?

I actually ran into a friend at the beach this morning that's in SDSU's BSN program. She shopped Maric before she started and thinks it's around $40k from scratch. Still a little steep. I think I'll just call the guy back on Monday and ask. I'll post the results once and for all.

Were you able to find out the cost of the RN when doing it from scratch? Also, how long is there program? I thought I heard they have an accelerated one year program.

Ok I just got off the phone with them. They are not accredited by NLN or Western Schools but they are accredited by the BON. They will not give a quote over the phone on specific numbers but I got the lady that I talked with to admit that if your starting from scratch you're "over 30K". They want to charge you $400. just to get a series of shots. What they do is get you in the office and have you shop out what you need and dont need by virtue of your transcripts and apparently by your shot record. It's pricey but you can definately get in and out. She told me that if I were to hustle I could start a program starting in April. 15 months to completion is the norm. Monday through Friday daytime hours, so plan on being a full time student.

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling they wouldn't give a price over the phone.

I'm a bit confused about the shot thing though. Are you saying the school charges $400 and does shots themselves? Is this like MMR and other vaccinations? Are they saying they won't do any admissions counseling until they get money from you and give you shots? And how does your shot record affect how quickly you can complete the program?

I can understand having to go in and meet with them to get a quote, but I'm very leery of anyone charging me money just to give me a sales pitch. Maybe I'm understanding it all wrong though.

Sorry for any misunderstanding. The cash for the shots part of the cost of the program I'm guessing. It has no bearing on how long it'll take you but how much it will cost you.

Oh, okay. But you can go in and meet with someone and map out how long it would take and how much it would cost without getting the shots right?

Oh yes indeedy! The lady I was talking to was about salivating at the prospect of me coming in for free to do just that. From what people say, you can get some good training from them and you can get an ASN in about 15 months with NO waiting list. These are good things. I havent heard from anyone that the caliber of training is sub-standard, in fact everyone says it's on par with everyone elses training. I just get the same feeling I get when I'm at the car dealership and the guy says," if I can get this car you love so much at the payment you want, will you bring it home today?" I feel like I'm about to get took. Probably just because it's so pricey.

Hi, I am a pre-nursing student with with one year left in the navy. I was wondering if you already went to Maric to plan out a map for your path of training and maybe you could tell me about the experience. I recently got an email from them after requesting for information on their website telling me that they were going to call me, I am also sometimes susceptible to being "taken" any help would be really appreciated. Hi

I'm with you hopefully I'll be out of the Nav in Sept. I havent gone over there yet, but I have had a couple long phone calls with them. I just ran into another surfing buddy of mine who just finished up his LVN at Maric. From his experiance they dont like to accept credit from anyone else. Which makes sense. They're in the business of "selling " you classes at their school. He said that the training was great and he's taking NCLEX-LPN in a month or so feeling about as confident as anyone else. The one thing that keeps coming up (and the big sticking point for me) is this place is expensive! Also it's Monday to Friday 8-4. If you're looking for a program that you can still have a job in, unless you're going to go to school in the day and work at night Maric may not be for you. They really dont have any other schedule. There are a couple really good scholarship programs out there that will pick up the tab, but like any scholarship there's no guarantee that you'll get it. Right now I'm sticking with SD City college and keeping all of my options open right down to the wire. I may end up at Maric, time will tell. Good luck in whatever you decide. If I find out anything more I'll post it.

Just talked with a friends daughter that just graduated from Maric SD RN ASN program. 16 months $42,000.00 all inclusive, from testing fees gear you call it. Loved the training. ready for NCLEX-RN.

we can put this one to bed. Now I just need to make a decision.

aloha
