Thinking of providing post partum & LC services

Nurses Entrepreneurs

Hi! I am new here. I have been working w/ developing a business plan & starting a business w/ a fellow RN. We were thinking of a home service plan that offeres post partum visits, Lactation services - as I'm a IBCLC, as well as helpful services to a new mom ie: shopping, house cleaning, child care... AS I am just in the beginning phase what do I need to think about - , prof nsg ins, advertising...how do I continue this avenue w/ realistic expectations? Being very new to starting my own business what other things, or helful ideas/comments do you offer?

thanks for your insight & advice!

Michele

Specializes in ER, NICU, NSY and some other stuff.

Would this in any way be billable to the Ins. companies? I know that some hospitals over the years have offered at least a well mommy and baby check without the extras. I have also seen some docs order at least one HH visit along these lines to check the baby wgt check, bili etc.

Sounds great though, You should offer gift certificates so thse could be a baby gift.

When I wrote my first business plan, I was in a class environment; it was stressed how very much I needed the insurance etc. Who is supporting you in your writing of your business plan? You should also have a support network of professions, i.e. Lawyer, Accountant, etc. to advise you (and "us of course" here at AllNurses.com)

Specializes in Education, FP, LNC, Forensics, ED, OB.

Hello, michamil,

There are nurse entrepreneur sites you may frequent that may be of use to you. PM me and I will give you the name.....

When I started my business, I sought out the advice of an attorney. I also, use an accountant. Just like nightngale said.

You must have . It is a HUGE must.

Where do you plan to have your business located? You will need to find out your city, county, state laws regarding the business. Small business license, assumed name for bank account. Types of incorporation, if you plan this. Who will be your agent of the incorporation? How many members? Do you want to keep monthly, quarterly or semiannual meetings of your board of directors? A name for the business .... and a petition to the Secretary of (your) State to see if it is feasible to use this name?

Many questions that the attorney can answer for you.

Believe me, nurses.........(ME)........do/did not have the business mind and must learn MUCH about the corporate world...

Good luck in your future business and as a Nurse Entrepreneur.

Sounds like you want to start a Postpartum Doula agency. I'm an RN who was a certified doula previously. I also would like to return to that type of care. I loved it! Have you checked out dona.org (Doulas of North America)?

I actually had just E-mailed for some more info. You were a doula prior to becoming an RN, or after? Basically that would be the services being provided, except that I am an IBCLC too.

Michele

I had taken a hiatus from nursing school (A.S. degree), had learned about labor doula from watching "A Baby Story" on TLC. Found DONA, got certified for labor doula. Then learned about Postpartum doula work and did that for an doula agency and loved it. However working for someone else, I was only making $12 for $20 charged to client per hour. Work was irregular but I really enjoyed it. Realized I really should complete nursing degree and did that. First job out of school I got an internship in NICU. After year and a half, realized it's not my niche - I like mother baby care. Plus staffing problems were ridiculous and dangerous. I resigned and am now searching for next move. I have also just visited DONA website for info on Postpartum Doula certification. I'd like to find a way to combine my nursing credentials with this.
