Hi there! I have been browsing this site for a few weeks now and just joined. I am currently working as a full time Esthetcian. I have always had the idea of going to nursing school in the back of my mind but am a little intimidated! I know how hard and competitive it is and would love some honest feedback from those that have ever been in my shoes. I would basically have to start from scratch. I have a fair amount of general education credits I earned form a community college right out of highschool. However I did not always do as well as I could have do to my priorities being out of order! I am 27(soon to be 28) now and defenitely more mature, responsible, and motivated. I just worry that my poor performance in the past will make it immpossible for me to get into the program! I am prepared to retake any pre-reqs that apply to the nursing program, and do whatever it takes to earn high grades along with a GPA that qualifies. I guess I am just wondering if I am a fool to give this a try? Any sugestions on ways to prepare myself as best as possible? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank You So Much!

I would find out the core nursing prerequisites for the programs that you are interested in attending.
Usually include:
Chemistry for health sciences (Nursing Chemistry)
A&P I/II
Microbiology
Nutrition
Abnormal Psych
Lifespan Developmental Psychology
Sociology
English Composition
Take these courses and focus on doing very well. Most nursing schools do a composite sub GPA from prerequisites. As long as you are doing well you should be able to get through the admissions process.
One other hint: Take your prerequisites from a CC. This is for the simple reason of taking courses from teachers who teach plus CC tuition is usually lower.
Best of luck!

When I first attempted college many years ago, I had a lot of bad grades on my transcript from not withdrawing from courses and receiving "F"'s. I just didn't care at that time in my life and did not know what I wanted to do. It depends, but most nursing programs just look at the required pre-reqs for their program in determining GPA. At least my program does. These courses are usually Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Psychology etc. I was able to take these courses in 2004 and make really good grades. Your sciences usually only stay good for five years anyway. You can always retake courses that you did not do so well in to improve your GPA. You should do it if this is what you want to do. Good luck!

I agree, you can do it!! You will find that many nursing students are more your age (or older)! If they can, you can too!
