Thinking about Excelsior, any advise?

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hello All~

I have just learned about "Distance Education" through a friend at work, by asking a bunch of ?'s, and by reading posts. I think that I will go directly thorough Excelsior, but I am worried about the clinical. I am not a new grad (finished in '00) and have only been working for about 4 months, in LTC. So far the main thing that I have learned is that I don't want to be in 'the home' any longer than I need to be (working or living, if you catch my drift), but the hospitals in MN are phasing out LPN's. Is the clinical portion of Excelsior passable for the AVERAGE student? I am running out of time, energy, and $$$ (not necessarily in that order) and hubby would be P'd big time if I didn't pass and had to pay $1600 x 2. Any feedback before I enroll would be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance :)

my old boss was an excelsior grad, and she was one of the sharpest, smartest nurses i ever met. i work in a rehab unit, and she constantly told me that i could do it. however, i put it off for far too long. two years, to be exact. i applied to excelsior for admission in may of 03, and ordered books, and.....well, they sat on my bookshelf cause i was too scared/tired/busy to study.

i started studying for a&p (i need all the pre req's) in september of 04, and tested in december, made an A. i just recently took nursing concepts 1 and 2, and made A's on both. i love to read and learn, so books and test are not my problem. i am scared to death of the clinical also, but i have excelsior grads telling me i could pass with no problem and that is a good motivator. from what i have read, if you prepare and study, do things their way (and not necessarily the way you do things in real life on the floor), and you can manage the STRESS of the CPNE, then you can do it. i have read over and over that it is a very doable exam.

so i keep on, and i hope someday soon to be an RN. i don't know if i helped you at all, but my advice is to go for it!

I thought the clinical was very easy. I have no hospital experience. It was very easy for me because I was VERY prepared. It will be VERY hard if you are not prepared. You will be sent a large study guide...it contains everything you must know to pass. Read it, memorize it, and you will do wonderful! Don't stress it. The people who typically fail just didn't prepare OR can't control stress to a workable level--because it is stressful.
