They Think I'm Working Christmas??

Ok so where I work they apparently don't tell the staff what they're working Christmas because they don't want to hear the moaning...(?). Well that has annoyed me already, but I had calmed down because I'm already working Sunday from 7pm-7am....so thats Christmas YES??

Well I go into work last night and there is the schedule. I'm working Sat and Sun 12 hrs ending Monday am and they have me down for going back for 3-11pm???? WTH??

Now I'm really worked up. Annoyed. Pissed off..you name it.

I ask the staffing coordinator and she says some nonsence about Sunday night not counting and she had to put me on Monday also..maybe I could switch with someone "LMAO".

Now mind you, I've asked all my kids and their families to dinner on Monday. I figured I'd go home, put the turkey in and nap. I'd be fine yea? Well NOT IF I have to go back to work.

I am not cancelling Christmas.

I left a note under the staffing coordinators door stating that because I cannot come back on Monday without any real sleep AND they failed to let us know so we could schedule our LIVES I was not working monday. Thank you very much...

As expected my phone just rang. DON.."Joanne give me a call so we can talk about the schedule." I didn't answer it!!!! I know I'll have to call back..eventually, but shes going to say "Work or be fired."

Thats the way its done there.

I think people whine entirely too much... if its your regularly scheduled hours you work... it'd be another scenario if it was forced overtime or something, call me crazy but without your employer you wouldnt have a home to go to and have family over for christmas... so missing out one year to give back to your employer and even more importantly your patients shouldnt be reason to cry.. and as far a finding out three days in advance we also get our schedules about 5 days before the next schedule is up due ot the fact that in the past people whined so much i think its a good thing... less whining means less of a headache for me

That's kind of harsh. Taking that way of thinking, slavery is a good idea because usually the masters provide a roof over your head and some food.

I think finding out what hours you are working five days before *any* day, let alone a holiday is beyond ridiculous. We are nurses, we are not slaves (thank goodness). And most of us have lives and other people depending on us. If i have to take one of my kids to a long awaited specialist appointment on a weekday, only to find out *5* days before that I have to work, that is just plain stupid. People have to plan and we can't plan if we don't have enough notice.

That's why, in our contracts, we must know 6 weeks in advance, although some institutions get away with only 4.

how is it all about me?... that makes no sense

slave not so much... i can leave at any time if i dont like the way things are run... thats the beauty of america... however im pretty grateful i have an employer and my employer takes care of me as much as i take care of them

Time to pull out your employee handbook. If any of these issues (lead time in scheduling, max hours worked within a 24 hour period or # of holidays worked per season) are addressed in there, you need look no further for back up.

Your facility is being ridiculous. If it were me, the point I'd vocalize most strongly is patient safety. Eight hours rest (assuming you'd actually get a full 8 hours, which of course you won't once travel time, etc are factored in) after 2 12 hour shifts is simply inadequate. This isn't whining, it is lodging a legitimate concern. There's a difference, and if your facility can't handle hearing legitimate concerns, that speaks loud and clear about what they think of both their patients and their employees.

mercy i agree qith you in the sense if you felt that youd be comprimising your patients... however i just dont feel you would, or maybe its id feel comfortable doing it... so i guess to each his own

This is nuts! I hope this NM does the fair thing and allows you off. I think I would be looking for a new position in the new year. Good luck.

This whole thing is patently unfair. I'm a staff scheduler who makes out each month's schedule six weeks in advance. There's no excuse for waiting until 3 days before a major holiday and then threatening to fire people for not wanting to work it, when they've probably made plans weeks ago.:angryfire

If I were you, I'd get myself a new job for Christmas.

Yep I will be. I find the whole thing a blantant slap in my face. My employer obviously doesnt care about me. Otherwise the schedule would of been given to us long ago.

I'm not whining. I just have a life besides work. And I plan on enjoying it.

So there's another reason this whole policy is ridiculous. jodyangel, I doubt you're the only person who will be turning in their resignation over that. Because your NM doesn't have the guts to listen to ''whining'', she instead is going to lose good nurses. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant... :uhoh21:

:uhoh3: Sigh.....how very constructive and helpful to this thread. Honestly, my family ranks way higher than giving back to my employer or worrying about giving others headaches.
