Therapy Animals to help with Addiction

Published

I recently made this decision to add to our family.........I am know the caretaker of a beautiful golden retriever puppy. I have heard and read about pets being good therapy animals and how they can help with the addiction disease process. However, I feel like he is increasing my anxiety which is becoming a little problematic for me. He is a lot of work. Maybe I am just overwhelming myself by the thought of all the extra work. I have a 15 yr old son who is faced with a lot of pressures about drugs and alcohol with in his school. He fell in love with this dog and I guess I was thinking if he had a dog “as a best friend “ it would help him cope better with outside pressures. Does anyone have any experience in animals and how they can help!

Having a puppy gave me an extra responsibility and something to sort of be accountable for. The first few months were absolutely horrible. I cried many nights because my very vocal puppy kept me up.

She definitely helps with my anxiety and I always look forward to coming home to see her.

Probably not what you were looking for but my mental health has definitely improved since having my puppy. She'll be 2 in July.

Lost my beloved friend of 15 years the day after I got her a companion. Going on a year with this new girl. It was hard at first but as the bond grows you realize how special a part of your life they can be.

Thank you for the positive comments!!!! My anxiety has turned into pure joy!!! A lot of work but he has already added to our family in so many ways!

thanks again!
