Therapeutic Tools for Calming One's Anxiety Level

i find the color blue to be a very therapeutic color as it calms my anxiety level when i am surrounded by the color blue...especially a french blue color.

i have been awake half the night....unable to sleep...so....guess who i turn to after i'm finished talking to my lord? that's right.....my allnurses siblings. :kiss

i was thinking of things that would calm my anxious heart, and remembered when i took industrial arts in high school how soothing it was for me to work with wood.

i love the smell of wood, sanding wood, shaping wood into different objects, etc. i even want to design and build my own wood furniture when i can afford the hobby.

i made a wooden fish with a green marble for an eye when my oldest daughter was a toddler. i was so very proud of my big fish, too. so was my kiddo! ;)

what things do you as nurses do that you find very therapeutic?

do you ever suggest to your anxious patients therapeutic hobbies to do while they are awaiting surgery, or recovering at home, etc.?

what calms you the most that you share with your patients or other peer employees when you notice that they are dealing with a very stressful situation in their life? :nurse:

Hi Gardengal :)

I love to watch a beautiful garden grow, but haven't been able to start one of my own since I left my parents home at age 17. My father forced all six of us kids to slave away in the family garden from BEFORE the crack of dawn......BEFORE we had any nourishment to eat, or brush our teeth. We barely got to potty first before being ordered out the door to the garden. It was around ten in the mornings when he would finally let us come in the house and have a bowl of cereal. Mean dictator...that one.

Flower gardens are beautiful, too, but I just haven't touched one as an adult in a laborious sort of way. Thanks for sharing with us how you relax and unwind best. :kiss

stephany......i would love to sing with you...anytime.....that i can do. ;) :kiss and blue is a very very relaxing color. i want my whole home done in blues and creams and berry colors one day when i get to own a home of my own. earthy colors mixed with lots and lots of various blues. mmmmmm...i can visualize my home by the pacific ocean very clearly. i will have it one day. no doubt about it. :D

Ladies, my favorite color is blue. Blue in all shades is fine with me! It just seems so "me," somehow! My husband's favorite color is green. Our living room has variegated shades of green in aberber carpet with forest green leather loveseat and sofa. The chair I am sitting in right now is called "putty" and is also leather.

Our bedroom has royal blue carpet. Our bathroom is blue and white. It seems that I really need to have blue i the areas where I relax and sleep!

Our upstairs family room is green, and beige.

That room is where I sew. Sewing helps me relax, esp. when I am listening to music. Thre is a computer and tv and exercise equipment up there, too, so its kind of an area where we do wht we want. That is also were we have a sofa and two easy chairs, and a whole wall of books. I can read books anytime, and lose myself to the world!

cathy.....you and i have the color blue in common. my husband's favorite color is also blue. we have so much in common, yet not enough of the right things in common to be blissfully happy. :p

his idea of relaxation is going bowling or sleeping. my idea of relaxation is ahem...sex...reading...

listening to my favorite music, hanging out with hubby joking and laughing with each other (which never seems to be in short supply......thank god) :chuckle....not to mention the things i mentioned in my first post already.

i want a home full of blue rooms built on a blue pacific oceanside to live out the rest of my blue days on this green, brown, and sky blue earth. :D

cheerfuldoer, you are terrific! this is one of the things i'm working on this week. it is so fun to hear what others do!

i love the color green, because it reminds me of my beloved evergreen trees, that even if the deepest, harshest winter, continues to give the promise of spring and life.

as for what i do, a light mystery (nothing too violent) is fun. a humourous movie. a walk with my dog. aromatherapy. learning something new (i love to research something). and, i play my mandolin. we've got a mandolin, a piano, and singing. maybe we should start an allnurses band! :balloons:

almost forgot to say . . .

i made my own bedroom furniture because i couldn't find what i wanted. it is all cedar in a southwestern style. don't wait, it isn't that expensive to do! i like working with wood, too.

Usually I think of the sun and all the fussion, energy waves that get stored on earth and a secret. If I go >72 hrs without achieving a HR=>140 BPM, then I start to bug out. Being health and fit is a double edged sword. I don't know what to tell ya! :-)

l sit on the front porch swing and watch the sun set....read psalms, watch old re-run of comedy shows....just wait it out....God is in control..........LR

Hey mario_ragucci! I was wondering where you'd been! Glad to see you back online!
