I've heard that they pay really well, but are hard to work for. How well is a question I can't answer. I think I remember that person telling me that they made 60,000 the first year there. He was a new grad as well and was an RN.

Somebody was blowing smoke up your "you know what". Most new grads (RN)are hired as a GS7, and that is nowhere 60K yr.
It is easy to find out how much they pay. Look at a job announcement for a position your are looking at and then go here http://www.opm.gov/oca/05tables/indexGS.asp
it has base pay rates and locality pay. This will give you a good idea. I believe (but not sure) that most LPN positions are GS5. There may also be a special pay scale for the position. I know my base is greater than what is listed.

MEDVAMC is one of the few VA hospitals with magnet status. If you can get in I would work there. The pay depends on the area of the USA that you are working. For example, the 2008 starting salary for a nurse in the north east is between $60-61,000.
Here is the 2008 pay scale table: Salary Table 2008-Houston
I would call the nurse recruiter directly to get the starting pay: Nurse Recruiter, at (713) 794-7473.

Thanks for the information. I have the salary table for locality pay but I was looking for the Nurse I, II, III, IV pay table. I think it is under 0610 pay???? I was looking for it on the internet. I was also wondering if you know anybody working there and how do they like it?

Don't know of anyone personally working there, but know of people working there that stay until retirement. Check out the allnurses.com Military-VA Nursing Forum for more information.

Yes, nurses can make at least $60,000 a year in base pay. In addition, if you add up the shift differentials it can be more like $65,0000.
I know this for a fact because I was just quoted $27.72 per hour in Madison WI from a VA nurse recruiter.

go to the nurse recruiter, LPN work really hard at the VA,
good luck with that
the Houston VA and San Fransico (SF) VA are the highest paying VA's in the county..of course you can't afford to live in SF no matter how much they paid you..
