The NCLEX TEST "why is it so difficult to pass"

Published

Well one thing is, is that there is so many books out there that you can purchase for it. Alot of them are difficult to follow and others are easier to follow. Some people take the test, don't pass and then turn around re-register wait there waiting period and just jump right back into taking the test to fast without really trying to figure out why they are weak in areas. I jumped 3 times taking my test in 2006 without really concentrate on what I was doing wrong, there goes $800 dollars down that drain and it doesn't include the re-registering fee. It is a hard test and they are wanting the best nurses to help people.

They want to know are we competent enough to be a good nurse, that is fair. I had people tell me that just because I didn't pass the test doen't mean I am not a good nurse. And I new I would be a damn good nurse. I finally settled down this year and tried to figure out the questions and rationals to the questions, why it was wrong and why i got it right. After answering so many questions, it finally comes to you what they are looking for. After a failed test you got to take a couple of weeks to relax and start studying again, and again!! Practice makes perfect and I did this majorly this year. Of course, you have people out there that will try to steal your shine but you kept on going and block out all that negativity and go for what you know and want, that's if you really want it. If you really want it, you will study hard at being successful on that test. Giving up will not do anything but depress you so you have to keep trying no matter what the cost.

A person said on her that every time she paid for her test that the NCLEX was hitting the lottery with her, I felt that too but I didn't give up. There is no way that we are going to remember all the drugs or disease out there I just studied what was in the book and a few others that was mentioned on this forum. I don't want to be the kind of person that passed my test and not pay it forward to help someone else. The test is a #@&*% but by gods will and lots of prayer, lots of focus, lots of believing, he got me though it this time.

I did not take 2 hundred questions a night and study everyday from sun up to sun down. I studied at my own paste and took as many test questions as I could everyday even if it was only a 10 question quiz sometimes, the brain has to breath, I still studied. Per my Friend Brandi, she suggested hanging cards of information on my mirror. That way you can study while getting ready for work. There you go studying and don't even realize it. I had flash cards all over my room. This may not work for others but it surely worked for me. First I was against flash cards, taking the time to make them up but I gave in and did them. I put on them, all of what I thought I needed to know like (lab values) for the test. Of course there is so much to learn and know but I broke down and did it. I think now If I have to study like this again, I am putting things on flash cards and take them where ever I go and studying every chance I get. I hope this helps anyone out there struggling on this test like I did.

Just FOCUS and BELIEVE in yourself. Slow down on answering the NCLEX question, read the question and know what they are asking. Sure there is test Anxiety, I had the worst test anxiety but I learned to calm down, and relax when in that NCLEX room taking the test, ear plugs, ear phones, this is suppose to block out all the noise and it is just you and the computer. I also stopped focusing on the time clock on the computer. It could tick away I wasn't hurrying through the most important test of my life again.

Now since I am an Licensed Practical Nurse. I think I will work in the field for a few years and than go for my RN. I don't care how much they higher the standards of the test, I will do it. Accomplishment just feel so good when you finally got it, your head is raised high in the air know that I just passed the craziest test in the world but you know what to be an RN I will take that crazy test again until I pass it. I feel that I can do anything in the world now since passing that crazy but good test, I was competent nurse when I passed that test, and that is what they are looking for, competent nursing. Well, Good Luck to everyone out there trying, don't give up (I didn't) and those who have passed try to help the ones that haven't. Have a Merry Christmas Everyone and a Happy New Year!!

Hi Mabama27, I took the kaplan review that costed $109 dollars a few years ago. It was pretty good and that is all I used to study with at that time but I still did not pass my test. When Suzzanes Plan was out before it got abused, she stated that all you needed to us is one book and one book only and that was Saunder's 3rd edition. I am not sure if you use the 3rd edition or 4th edition for RN's but that is the book I used mainly. I also used Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment by Linda A LaCharity for RN's, but it helped me as an LPN too, this book was easy to read and it had Case Studies at the end of it to do, good book. You need to make sure you know the content really well and do questions, questions and questions. Make sure you read the rationals even if you got the answer right. I could not study 100 to 200 questions a day, I did about 50 a day. I have a fulltime job and studying 8hrs a day and doing 500 a day was not going to happen. I studied what I could. I study content and took test on the CD of Saunders, it really helps!! I made flashcards of the infection control. There is a thread on here that list all the precautions and they use them in different words so that you can remember them easily. I made flashcards of the lab values, I made flashcards of whatever I needed to remember and I took them to work with me so that when I had free time I could study them. So if I could not do questions when I got home from work at least I could say, I did study something for the day. When you get ready to take your test, eat a healthy breakfast, calm yourself, be positive, pray, pray always. When you get to the center and get all checked in and you are sitting at that computer, close your eyes say a prayer, breathe, try to take yourself in your mind to a happy place that is calm, and relaxing. An RN told me to do that and it worked!! Take your time with each and every one of those questions, understand what it is asking, take deep breathes (Got that from the RN Too). Write down on your pad all of what you can remember, write Maslow, labs, infection control, meds if you can remember some. Do your process of elimination, than choose the BEST Answer. If you get to a break, take it, you don't have to take the full 15 minutes but you do need to take a break when it tells you (at least the 1st one). Go and catch some fresh air, and stretch yourself, clear your mind. You are going to do fine, stay on this forum, ALLNURSES will get U through this. Than you will have to come back and tell your story how you made it over:). Good luck with your future test, you can and will do it  I did, no matter how many times I had to take the test, it's over and it is wonderful feeling and I just want to tell the whole world my story and pay it forward to someone else in need of help!!

Jefang5 it is normal to have nervousness about this test, everyone is. But somehow you got to find the courage to leave (nervousness) outside the door when you go to take the test. When I went to take my test I said " You are not going to cause me to fail this time, I have an Important test to PASS and you (nervousness, anxiety) is not going to ruin it for me and I am not paying another red cent for this test" (which I would:)) but luckily myself talk and prayer, granted my wish this time!! You can do it jefang5, be positive, focus and BELIEVE. Good luck on your future test, you can do it:up:

Hi Jollygirl098,

I went to my LPN program everyday, through rain, sleet, snow, heat, whatever. I was there everyday for 17 mths, passed all my courses, never missed a clinical, I did not miss a beat. And can you believe the students that was messing up and missing days and even having problems in there clinicals, PASSED their test!! Yes, I felt like a total dum dum. The ones that was on the boarder of not making it in the program, PASSED. I Felt like s%@* (Can't say that word). But as long as I felt like that and no matter how many times I took the test, I failed. Until I lost the feeling of dumbness and s%@* I was able to PASS that test (Took me a little while but I finally did it). I was able to GET UR DONE!! The week before my test in Dec. 09 I had a really bad cold, I was just a mess, I still studied even through I just wanted to crawl up in bed and sleep like a baby but no, I had to give my effort (my all and all) and study because if I didn't pass this time, it wasn't going to be because I didn't study. When I was getting checked in I told them I had a cold and can I bring my tissue. I couldn't even use my own tissue for pete's sake, they think you have some lab values or something in your own tissue (NO CHEATING). They let me take as many of their tissues as I needed:). The test was only rough this time because I had a cold. As bad as I felt, I didn't think I would do well but the test was fine. I study what I studied, content and all that so I understood the questions and what they was asking, took my time, took breaths, prayed, stayed positive, stayed calm, I had nothing left in me to give. I figured that if I didn't pass this time again, it is not the end of the world and I will just pay to take it again and again until I get it. That day, I was truly blessed and I never stopped thanking the good LORD above (I still can not believe it, me passing, the nerve of me TKOing this test:)). You can do this Jollygirl098. Stay focused and believe in yourself!! Good Luck with your future test!!

Thank you so much for this post!! I'm so happy for you and reading this has given me inspiration. I have failed my NCLEX RN 2 times now. It is very frustrating and sometimes I ask myself if this is for me. NCLEX is a very tough test and I keep reminding myself of that. So happy for you and hope you pursue your RN!! Best of luck.

A good attitude to have is to realize from the first day of nursing school that everything that is covered in school will be likely to show up on that NCLEX after one graduates. In nursing school there is no such thing as "study for the exam and then forget it all because it will never be seen again". Throughout school, it pays to engage in an ongoing review program that you do for yourself.

NurseLil-lea THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORDS OF SUPPORT. I WILL NOT THINK I WOULD OF COME TO THIS PAGE. AND SAID THAT I PASS MY RN NCLEX. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. IT'S ALL GOD. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, AND I WANT HIM BY MY SIDE UNTIL I DIE. I PRAYED AND MY PRAYER DID GO UP THERE GIRL.. MY MESSAGE TO THE ONE WHO DON'T TAKE IT YET. DON'T GIVE UP, AND HAVE GOD IN YOUR SIDE. THANKS AGAIN.
