The Movie Thread

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

Hi @Tweety,

Is Dune a remake of the one several years ago where they searched for "vital spice"?

Right now, I'm watching Zoo (3-yr episodes) on Netflix. Not too bad. About how all animals have finally decided they will be the dominant species. That includes everything from microscopic organisms to now-extinct dinosaurs and everything in between. LOL!

Haven't been out to a movie theater in a few years so I wait until they come on PPV, etc., or later on Netflix/Hulu.

I saw Dune.  It's pretty good, at least good enough that I watched the whole thing.  Kinda reminded me of Star Wars...

I saw that Dune was on like HBO or something a few weeks back and kept seeing "search for vital spice". I don't know what vital spice is. I'm going out on a limb here ... it probably has nothing to do with kitchen spices, right?

Hmmm, maybe I'll watch it next time it comes on ... (however, probably no vampires or zombies in it).

LOL..."spice" is:   a valuable substance that bestows its users heightened vitality and expanded consciousness.

Sounds like a 1960's drug.  LOL.

It's on Amazon Prime for rent which is why I mentioned it.

Of the Academy Award nominees for best picture this year I've seen Belfast (excellent), Power of the Dog (excellent), Licorice Pizza (excellent), West Side Story (fantastic), and King Richard (excellent).

I haven't seen Dune, CODA, Nightmare Alley or Drive My Car.

What's annoying is that CODA is on Apple TV only and it looks good but I don't subscribe. Nightmare Alley is on HBOMax which I don't subscribe to either.  They make it difficult to see new movies if you miss them at the theaters.   And some like CODA were only in a few select theaters just to make sure it got a theatrical release to qualify for awards.

Looks like CODA is available to rent on Amazon Prime for $2.99

Yes, sounds like LSD trips.

I want to see Power of the Dog. I like the actor, Jesse Plemons. He was in Breaking Bad and a TV series of Fargo.

And, I think I'd like Nightmare Alley, too. A bunch of good actors in this one.

So I did wind up renting "Dune" on Amazon Prime and it was very good.  Well done with good visual effects and I like the soundtrack.  There were some things I didn't quite get, but I never read the book.  The beginning said "Part I" and at the end one of the characters said "this is only the beginning", so I guess there's another movie to come.  Will have to Google that.

Glad you liked it Tweety.  I agree - great visual effects.

The director is "toying with the idea of turning his feature adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction book series into a trilogy".  Part Two will arrive in theaters on its current release date of October 23, 2023.

Rats, I got excited but it's not the same CODA.

This is the one I want to see, but it's on Apple TV

I saw another Academy Award nominee "Drive My Car".  It's most likely going to win the foreign category as it's won several major critics awards for Best Picture and is nominated in the Best Picture category as well.

I was three hours long and we had to take an intermission for a snack and bathroom break, but it was really excellent.

Much like his director, the 40-year-old producer’s career had been steadily on the rise at home in Japan, but Drive My Car‘s cascade of honors — three awardsat Cannes, best picture from all three major U.S. critics groups, a Golden Globe for best foreign language film, and four Oscar nominations, for best film, best director, best adapted screenplay and best international film — have lifted his profile to a higher international plane.

I'm a big TCM fan. Just finished watching Jimmy Stewart in HARVEY. Playing now is LUST FOR LIFE, with Kirk Douglas, but I don't feel up to staying up for another two hours to watch it. Also, I love, love, love The Thin Man series of movies.

I'll watch the Oscars even though I have not seen any of the movies. Just like to marvel at the outfits.
