The Lost Art of Letter Writing

Published

Remember that? Sending and receiving mail through the postal service? I use the term postal service because when I first heard it referred to as snail mail back in the late '90's, I found it derogatory. As if something is slow, it's no good. Out of date.

But I remember as a 7-year-old in the Summer of 1964 waiting by the mailbox for my Weekly Reader and oh what a joy to have something personally mailed to me that I could read and enjoy, and it had my name on it!

And the Summer of 1973 when I was 16 and my high school sweetie was on vacation with her family, and we would write Words of Love to one another. "Love Letters straight from your heart keep us so near while apart... I memorize every line, and I kiss the name that you sign".

Ahhhhhh! Letters!

Recently, I've been getting more into retro art- ink stamps, typewriting, etc.- posting them on the various websites I frequent. Today, I needed to communicate with the managing editor of one site and chose to do so via the postal service. What a charge! I sent him some necessary paperwork and included a comic:

I told one of my virtual online friends that I absolutely love to write. In days past, while others bitched and moaned about paperwork, I actually enjoyed it. I write and draw in my journals every day, sometimes for hours.

So I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool to exchange handwritten letters?!"

Anywho, I'm attempting to revive the Lost Art of Letter Writing.

Well, I found out what happened to the letter of July 5th which was the first one I mailed. It was returned to me because it did not have a postage stamp. Highly unlikely!

The stamp was probably stolen by a postal worker who had gone postal and needed a stamp!

Anyway, I covered the "Inadequate Postage" stamped on the envelope with a blank label (which I believe should be spelled l-a-b-l-e), placed a stamp on it and will post it tomorrow.

Maybe you'll get it by Christmas!

Wonder if it will make it through this time? I'll let ya know one way or t'other.

I kind of have lost my letter-writing energy for the moment. There are too many things going on here with hubby's health woes, and having to do all the household chores and what-nots (errands, etc.). Hoping things will straighten out and/or settle down so I can have my mind back to play in.

I hear ya, No Stars.

What started out as letters with my NY pen pal has gone to postcards. He started it, really, and I followed suit. It's really kind of fun, because we often do art based on one of our online discussions.

Hey- that inspires me to do some art !

Aha! I am sending you one (not original) cartoon via postcard; will be mailed when they pick it up from our box later today. Found some other things I can make copies of to send along to you. Hope to find some original odds and ends to mail 'soon', as well.

Gotcher post card postmarked the 7th, received on the 10th, and chuckled heartily at the mailbox!

ACT-SHOO-ALL-LEE, I didn't find the mailbox humorous, although it does process some wonderfully bucolic characteristics.

Perhaps a rephrasing is in order:

While still at the mailbox, I chuckled heartily at the postcard.

The world, once again, moves in greased grooves.

I correspond regularly with my NY pen pal, James. He made note that his bell was stolen off of his e-bike, I had an extra, so I mailed it to him.

We regularly mail each other art, and I made art out of the art he bad sent. Belinda commented on the art:
