The Lost Art of Letter Writing

Published

Remember that? Sending and receiving mail through the postal service? I use the term postal service because when I first heard it referred to as snail mail back in the late '90's, I found it derogatory. As if something is slow, it's no good. Out of date.

But I remember as a 7-year-old in the Summer of 1964 waiting by the mailbox for my Weekly Reader and oh what a joy to have something personally mailed to me that I could read and enjoy, and it had my name on it!

And the Summer of 1973 when I was 16 and my high school sweetie was on vacation with her family, and we would write Words of Love to one another. "Love Letters straight from your heart keep us so near while apart... I memorize every line, and I kiss the name that you sign".

Ahhhhhh! Letters!

Recently, I've been getting more into retro art- ink stamps, typewriting, etc.- posting them on the various websites I frequent. Today, I needed to communicate with the managing editor of one site and chose to do so via the postal service. What a charge! I sent him some necessary paperwork and included a comic:

I told one of my virtual online friends that I absolutely love to write. In days past, while others bitched and moaned about paperwork, I actually enjoyed it. I write and draw in my journals every day, sometimes for hours.

So I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool to exchange handwritten letters?!"

Anywho, I'm attempting to revive the Lost Art of Letter Writing.

Not much of a letter, actually, just some of my old sketches. But you will enjoy them, I'm sure. ?

EXACTLY what I was hoping for!

Yesterday, being temperate and rainy, was a perfect day to go to a bookstore. "I don't need any books or magazines", I informed my wife, "I just want to browse".

"Oh, you don't think you NEED any books or magazines" said the Tempted Fates, "We'll show you!"

There, in the Arts Section of magazines, I picked up the quarterly publication of a British published magazine titled Sentimental Journal. The featured stories were on Penmanship, the Love of Typewriters, Five Decades of Stamps, and Gifts in the Mail. Other articles included Mysteries from the Scriptorium and Flea Market Finds.

I read A Glimpse into This Volume which read, "An art movement that took place outside of the galleries.  You could do anything you wanted, artistic anarchy. It was about artists wanting to exchange artwork... Receiving art by mail was such a joy, even the envelope was often a piece of artwork".

Letters from the Editors stated, "We've also been imagining how nice it would be to receive physical mail again- a card or a letter. In this day and age, people do receive a lot of deliveries, but we've almost forgotten the simplest way to get mail. That is to say, a Christmas greeting or a postcard through the letterbox instead of junk mail, bills, and online shopping.

With that in mind, we take our inspiration from the active art movement Mail Art, which started in the 1960's in America and spread all over the world."

The Lost Art of Letter Writing is in revival, proven by the recent post card posted above and by a manilla envelope filled with copies of cartoons by my other pen pal!

I noticed the barefooted state of the character, also, No Stars, along with Winter type garb, all adding to the situational humor.

But what first attracted me to the cartoon was the quality of the drawing, which is a New Yorker style in essence. The simplicity of the sketch with its diagonal shadow lines is truly attractive.

With a review like that one, it almost makes me wish I had drawn it.
