The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

I was thinking about two different things (nothing passes the time like allnurses since school for me starts in 3 weeks!)

1. Doesnt getting this scholarship add to your "income" making most peoples efc higher for next year, thus making us not ablt to recieve the second year??

2.Is anyone afraid to accept this scholarship and not be able to get a qualifying job in the amount of time after graduation it gives you? I mean is not new news that some people on here have no jobs or are getting them a year after graduation.

Just wondering...

I do beleive it does add to your income according to the rules. Even with the money it will not change my EFC. Because if you think about it.. it will only be a few months before the next tax year starts.

I am very nervous about being able to find a job after graduation. I have left a message with the people at the HRSA department who are involved with which place qualifies as "needing nuses" to find out exactly what place qualifies where I live. I would hate to have to drive and hour+ to and from work on top of working a 12 hour shift with two small kids at home...

Guess i was one of those 250 who didnt make it.....maybe my gpa cut me out....I still have not had one email. Im from PA and in the 1st preference group. :crying2:

I am in the same boat....I thought I had a shot at getting this. My GPA is 3.5, I have 2 semesters left in nursing school, & am in the 1st preference group. I guess maybe they didn't like my essays, or my GPA isn't high enough...don't know.

I don't think it is your GPA. Mine is less then that and I received the emails.

I don't think it's the GPA.... I have over a 3.9 after prerecs and 2 semesters of the nursing program and I have not gotten a banking email either. I am also in the 0 EFC catagory so I don't think they are choosing based on GPAs.

Specializes in non-animals.

Yea...it can't be the GPA because I got the letter and I only sent in my partial transcripts that had nursing classes on it. Maybe they just haven't gotten to everyone yet?

To be honest i don't think we will ever find out why we were not chosen. The rejection letter will most likely say something like "Unfortunately, we are not able to offer you a award at this time. We had more applicants then there are awards. Since you did fall into the 1st preference group you are welcome to apply again next year." :uhoh3: Lol. I cant give up hope though...there may be some applicants who deny offers or people they can't get hold of!

Dont give up hope, you are right, Some may not want it after all. I hope you get it!

angmichellk3,

When you say you are in the first pref. group, does that mean this is your first degree, have a zero efc and are accepted into a program. It's my understanding that all three of those qualifications have to be met. If you already have a degree you would not be considered first funding group. I also read a post that said the GPA's and Essays are being looked at now to narrow down all those who qualified to just those who will actually be awarded. I don't know if they looked at them to make their first round of cuts. I got the emails, and my GPA overall is only 3.6, my efc is zero and this will be my first degree. If you read some of the earlier posts, you'll see that some people were worried about if they submitted everything just the way "they" wanted it. I was told they could disregard your application for just about any stupid reason. Who knows, but not to worry just yet, no one has gotten anything but an email that says, "maybe"?

good luck to you

I read over the funding preference questions on the HRSA website and I don't think having a previous degree puts you out of the first funding group. I think what matters is if you are pursuing your undergrad degree (BSN, ADN) versus your graduate nursing degree.

Yeah this is my first degree, I have a zero efc and are already in the nursing program. I just hope I didn't make a stupid little mistake on anything I submitted!!! Thanks for the luck:)

I do not think that it matters it is your first degree or not. I will be pursuing my second degree with nursing, I already have a BA in another field. I have received all of the emails up to this point, so I believe I am still in the running for the scholarship.

Who knows HRSA's reasoning on things. Like someone else said, we will most likely never know. Good luck everyone!
