The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

I am hoping to start a thread for current students who are receiving the HRSA scholarship (or others who have received it in the past). I just accepted my offer and will receive the scholarship for three years. This way we can connect with others who may have hit some snags, have had successes, or maybe have some suggestions for really interesting service sites upon graduation.

When I graduate, my daughter will be entering kindergarten so I want to be thoughtful as to where we end up going for my service (if we end up moving away). I am starting to look at places and would love to share research with others. I have a background in international work through the Peace Corps and I'm excited to continue that work through nursing.

Maybe we can offer information about the states we live in. I am in Maine and there are several tier 1 areas here. I would love to share any info I have about my state if anyone is interested.

I've also had some ups and downs with logistics of the scholarship and would love to hear how others have managed finances.

Forgive me....what is the HRSA scholarship?

Health Resources and Services Administration. It is a federal program that awards scholarships to nursing students in exchange for at least a two year commitment to work in a nursing shortage area upon graduation.

The scholarship pays all tuition plus a monthly living stipend and money toward books and uniforms.

It is an amazing opportunity but it is very competitive to get into. You can find out more at their website if you Google it. (I can't post a link as I am on my phone right now)

The next application cycle is in the spring.

That sounds awesome.....I will have to check it out! Thanks!

Thanks so much! I just have to figure out what all the codes mean lol. I accepted a pcna position at the Cleveland clinic and am hoping I might be able to stay there once I graduate.

Basically any not for profit. Yes's would be Veterans Admin, Indian Health, not for profit hospitals, federally funded clinics, usually anything very rural, public health nurse jobs and school nurse jobs. No's would be for profit LTC, Dr's offices, for profit hospitals and clinics. I hope the economy picks up before you graduate because it has been really tough finding any job, let alone make sure it meets my HRSA requirements. I sent a list of names to places around me before I set out looking, because applying and then having HRSA say nope, is really frustrating. Oh, and do not ever tell them you were offerred a Per Diem position. They will not accept that either. Better to just take the job and have employer put hours you are working. And in the event you cannot locate employment you have to forward who you are applying to and all denial letters you get to get a 30 day extention. The scholarship was a godsend for me during school, but finding a position to satisfy them in this job market has been tough. Network all you can in school! Good luck!

I can pretty much guarantee that the Cleveland Clinic is not an HPSA. It's a huge, nationally ranked medical center... they're certainly not struggling for applicants.

And not any not-for-profit is going to count. The majority of hospitals in the US are "not-for-profit". This just means that any profit that they do make has to be reinvested in the institution. I live in a major city with MANY major academic medical centers... every single one of them is "not-for-profit" and NONE of them are considered to be "health professional shortage areas". The only "shortage areas" in the city are community health centers in the poor sections of the city and healthcare for the homeless programs.

Does anyone know any scholarship opportunities for accelerated bsn nursing students? :)

Yes! any scholarship opportunities for ABSN stduents? :)

Hello all,

I'm a new member here at allnurses.com ...the reason I finally joined is that I really need some of your advice regarding my HRSA scholarship.

I graduated this May at a university here in Philadelphia, PA. Do any of you have any advice in looking for HPSA approved sites? I've been looking for months now with no success nor any progress. Most sites say they only hire medical assistants and can't afford RN's. There's a lot of eligible sites that I found here in Philly but they are just not hiring. I don't know what else to do. I tried looking for sites that are further from my location but still come up empty.

What I really want is to work inpatient. I looked at their list of CAH (critical access hospitals) and the closest one to me is 4 hours away and I don't even know if they are hiring.

If someone can give me any advice at all that would be wonderful. I'm starting to feel trapped because of this scholarship.

Thanks!

I currently live in Oklahoma and graduate in May. I would really like to move to a new state and work for two years but I honestly have no idea what I am doing. I would really like to get 2 years under my belt and was wondering if:

1. There are any programs or hospitals that will do loan forgiveness or help pay for my schooling if I commit two years.

2. There are specific states with higher rates of hiring new grads or paying them more.

Thanks!
