The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Published

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

Hello,

I'm a 33 year old loooking to get into an RN-ADN program. I'm working on various courses now and volunteeing. I was thinking of completing a 3 month CNA program to get some more experience and increase my chances of getting into an RN program. Anyone have any experiences with this?

I'm aware that the CNAs don't do everything the RNs do, I see them the days I volunteer. But I have to imagine it is valuable.

I'm also considering pursuing the Masters when I am done with the RN. I already have a BS in Biology and the NP degree sounds useful. I havn't seen too many posters here saying much about NP however....

Hey, Northwest:

The CNA course will help you out a lot in the nursing fundamentals clinicals because you'll already know all the basic stuff like pt safety, pt hygienic care, how to do vitals, etc. I know that LPNs usually have an advantage when it comes to getting into the RN program I'm in, but I don't think they give the same consideration to CNAs. Check with the ADN program you're thinking about applying to about their entrance requirements. I doubt any RN program is easy to get into, but your degree in biology might work to your advantage since most programs have natural science and math prerequisites. You might find that there's a waiting list, but don't be discouraged by that.

Depending on who you talk to you'll get different opinions about becoming an NP. Many RN students I know say they can't be bothered with grad school because nursing school was more than enough stress for them. It really depends on what you want and how much time and $$$ you have to invest in your career. If you eventually plan to teach or practice at a more advanced level, then I would say go for the NP because it gives you more career options. There are lotsa people on here who are NPs so maybe a few of them will jump in and tell you about their experiences.

Hey guys! My name is David and I am a senior in high school and I really think that my calling in life is to become a nurse. The thing is, people don't really cheer me on in becoming a nurse. How do I overcome this? Also, how do I know that this is the profession for me? It makes me mad I really want to be a CNA but I cant find a program! If anyone is willing to share their story how they became a Nurse or help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot! :)

You probably want to educate yourself about the nursing profession first. A good place to start is to go to http://www.discovernursing.com and look at the over 100 nursing profiles. Also look at all the different specialties.

Then see if you can get "Majoring Nursing - From Prerequisites to Postgraduate Study and Beyond" by Janet Katz from your local library or something.

In terms of getting support from other people, you really need to find out the reasons they are not supportive (look at it as practicing your listening skills and critical thinking skills as a nurse) in the first place before you can address it. For example, do they even know what modern nursing actually does? Are the people who is not supporting you because of their image of nursing or because you are male? Those are different reasons.

Pick up a few interesting things about the nursing field and start a conversation like did you know there are specialize nursing areas like Nursing Attorney, Nursing Informatics, Forensic(sp) Nursing, Flight nursing, ... etc. Or did you know nurses can get a Ph.D. in nursing. Or certain nurse specialty at the graduate level can prescribe meds? You get the idea.

Hey the slagging i get for doing this isn't funny, but if it's really wha yu want, yu'll do it, trust me/! yu jus gotta get into the frame of mind that 'i don't care what anyone thinks, if i want it i gotta go for it!' Evan my girlfriend is being a b***h bout me doing this!!! but hey, yu gotta get on with it! (as well as that, JUS THINK of all the girls that yu'll be with every day for 4 years):chuckle (HE-HE):chuckle

Word of caution on the Accelerated MSN - not all MSN degrees are offered in accelerated format and some MSN degrees are not available if you already have an MSN. (strange, but true, though I think it's silly)

Also - some say that having an MSN without any nursing experience is a bad thing, but I have no idea if that's really true.

Sorry, call me amazingly stupid, but wha is an accelerated msn????

First I worked in restaurants....... then for a telecom..... then I drove big 18 wheelers.... then insurance... now I've finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up.

Heh.

I'm a 27 y/o male, who just finished his first week of class working towards an ADN. One week down, about three more years to go. yippie!!!!
