The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

The choice is up to you but I have heard of a lot of Rad Techs and Resp Therapists that get tired of the same thing all the time (unless you have a passion for those areas for some reason) Obviously nurses can go in 1000 directions (including UP- to an advanced degree) I'm a Paramedic, which I've been doing 20 years. I love it, but the pay is bad and there isn't much of a career ladder. I got my LPN in August and will have my RN in May. I got a grant that is paying for everything (3 years of school) Money is out there for anyone interested (no need to take out loans that you will regret later)

Go for your RN. you have more chance of higher pay, more challenges and you can go for your CRNA, FNP, or be an administrator. Heck since you have a background in arts and design, you might be interested in nursing informatics.

Hey fellas (and the occasional lady popping through),

I am starting my nursing I clinicals this Tuesday. I am so amped up to be in this field. I was in the rat race since I was 16 (27 now) always hitting a ceiling wherever I worked. I am no slouch and excel wherever I go, but not having a degree has made things difficult to say the least. I literally feel like I found a light at the end of a dark tunnel. I was a bit worried about being 1 of 4 guys in a class of 50 but they seem to treat everyone the same. Not to mention, I am way more concerned with the crazy workload they've prepared us for.

Prestige, opps for advancement, flexibility, money....I could keep goin, this field has it all.

I just wanna wish everyone the best of luck in school and in the field!!!!

If you dig a little into this thread, you will see that apparently there are ALOT of advantages to being a guy in this field, not the least of which is the female to male ratio. I'm about to start the 2nd half of my RN program in Dallas, and there are now 3 guys left. Most failed (many were foreign and struggled with the lecture portion). I even got the 1st pick in our lotto to choose clinical spots, and one of the admins joked "there's only three of you left, I wanna keep you." lol

Now, it was a double blind lotto, so there couldn't have been any funny business but still, like I have said before, I wouldn't wanna be the ONLY guy in the program, but I do like being one of the very few. It may not help, but I don't think it hurts.

I'm enjoying being one of a handful of guys that are truly serious about the nursing program. The girls - especially the teeny bopper, high school variety - get REALLY nervous when they know they are competing against guys that are KILLING them on the tests and the classwork. Most of the men aiming for our program have the girls WHIPPED points wise. If we can pull the whole program in this manner... it will really be saying something.

hi friends .im a BSN from India ......its true that sometimes that nursing feels like a feminine profession .but facts here in India shows that male nurses have taken most of the top posts rom the president of the trained nurses association of india to the regulatory body like the Indian Nursing council.....well wat say? we rock

I am admitted to the Michigan ABSN program and expect to be a minority as a 40 year old male. I have not started yet so I do not know the numbers, but, I expect it to be below 10%. Should be fun in any event.

What's up? Respiratory Care Practitioner married to an RN with 2 kids. Working full time and doing the Excelsior program. Live in Northern Virginia where we are definitely seeing a noticeable increase in male nurses.

Dude, that's freakin' awesome! Keep at it man. I know how hard it can be to get into some schools and all that stuff, but it'll be very much worth it once you get in there and start reaching some goals.

I spent 10 years working in a steel mill before I joined the Army and got my LVN. I love being in the Army and being a Medic/Nurse here, but I wish I would've done it much sooner. I'm more than 10 years your senior and not yet ready to get into a BSN program. Better to get that education young and get going as soon as you can.

yea, i know how hard it is, i'm in that stage right now but i really hopw it's all worth it at the end, putting up through all these sacrifices and pain. hopefully i can get into a nursing school. that'd be great if i did, then i'd be once step closer to being a CRNA (or NP if things don't go as planned).

an army nurse huh? i had thoughts about doing that as a CRNA but who knows. i also have been getting thoughts about going into the peace corps too.
