Hi All!
I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.
I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.
When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.
So I want to know are there any men out there?
Are you filipino? What university are you studying at? Are you going to be able to set for the NCLEX in Manila when you are finished with your program. My wife is filipina and had thought of going to school in Manila. I would be interested in talking with you about your program in Philippines. Thanks!
Dave
Hey guys.
I'm about to start 3rd Semester at El Centro in Dallas, ADN Program. Out of our 50 that started, there were about 6-10 guys, but now it's down to 3.
I like the ration. I wouldn't wanna be the only guy, but I like being one of just a few. It makes it easier for people to remember you.
Hello out there. Starting ASN program in Jan. at OLOLC New Orlens, West Jeff. Hospital.
I believe we're pioneers of sorts- breaking the stereotype gender role which is out there. There's been a nursing shortage for as long as I can remember. Why?, I can only guess- pay, work conditions, marriage & children goals, etc.
The profession needs bodies; mine is younger than most my age of 52! I suspect that I'm part of an experiment, seeing if a male, an older one at that, can hack it with younger students, mostly female. So far I've got the undergrad grades, exam scores that says I can.
You're as young as you feel and perform- pun intended! Patient's, with rare exception, don't care about your gender, only about the care they receive! I know this having managed a cardiology practice and having been an echo tech for a number of years.
Talking to a retired police office with prostate cancer (in remission) the other day complimented me on my decision to enter nursing. Of note, he mentioned that he's uncomfortable with women examining him and would prefer the doc (male) or another male doing the check-up; no he's not gay. Far from it; he's on his third marriage (younger wife at that). O.K., he might have relationship issues.
There's a place for all of us- if anything work harder, smarter showing everyone that you mean business.
yea Im a guy
I just graduated in dec with my MSN as a FNP
I work in a medical ICU as a RN
Im also a combat medic in the guard, I used to jump out of
airplanes when I was in the active army
I served in combat, I like spicy beef jerkey, comedys and star trek:cool:
The girls at work cant resist me.
I have not succumbed to the feminization attempted by nursing
their will did not work on me. I am strong
I can laugh at myself and I laugh at others
Sometimes when Im stressed out I do bang my head against a wall:banghead:
Hi Guys,
38 yr old who started school in September. I am in a semi accelerated RN program in at a private (read for profit) trade school that just started its RN program last yr. The school previously trained just medical asst, coders, and lab techs. I say the program is semi accelerated becuase they require no pre-reqs, just doing well on the TEAS test and passing through several informal interviews. The program still takes 2 years but your pre-req classes are built into the curriculum. I just started my 2nd quarter with 2 quarters to go before clinicals start. I still work full time on a weekend option shift (32 hours over two days), have three children 5, 6, and 12, and a supportive wife. I have worked 12 years in direct care as an aide/tech at hospitals or in group homes with DD children or people with TBI or cognitive problems due to strokes. I have been reading this forum for a few months and find myself having the same thoughts I see many posters have...am I too old? is being a man detrimental or is it beneficial? how do my grades, school, program stack up against others? etc.
I am glad to be here and hope to post to more about my experiences as a newbie in nursing school.

Were you in the Marine Corp?
No, you are not too old. What school are you going to ?
Yea 89-93 2nd Bttln 5 Mar hvy weapon company 0351 (anti tank dragon gunner)
And no I'm not too worried about my age, in my class of 32 I am one of 2 men and most of the students are in their mid 20's with a few fresh out of high school. If anything I tend to exchange the word "old" for "seasoned"
I am attending Medtech College in Indianapolis, IN with an expected Grad date of Sept 2010.

Cool,
I was a paratrooper medic in the Army from 89 to 95 and I am currently in the National Guard since 1996.
I live in Indy myself and work in a medical ICU. I graduated with my masters as a FNP in December
Hey Guys! I have been posting around in different areas but haven't stopped by here yet. I am debating between three fields still: Registered Nurse, Radiologic Tech and Respiratory Therapy. I still have few pre-reqs to take so I have some time to decide. I am coming into the field (head first!) after 12 years in the Graphic Design (BFA) Industry.Hope to see you all around!
The choice is up to you but I have heard of a lot of Rad Techs and Resp Therapists that get tired of the same thing all the time (unless you have a passion for those areas for some reason) Obviously nurses can go in 1000 directions (including UP- to an advanced degree) I'm a Paramedic, which I've been doing 20 years. I love it, but the pay is bad and there isn't much of a career ladder. I got my LPN in August and will have my RN in May. I got a grant that is paying for everything (3 years of school) Money is out there for anyone interested (no need to take out loans that you will regret later)
