Everywhere you look, obesity is there. I am not advocating to be a food policeman, but we need to start making a voice in our land. People do not like being overweight. But certain foods are addictive and the public needs to be educated on proper unbiased nutrition. Meat and dairy products and foods that are fried are absolutely in no way beneficial to the human body. The human physiological system is completely adaptable to a total vegetarian diet. But with the refined sugars and fatty foods that poison our body and cloud our minds, addiction sets in deep and becomes 'nearly' impossible to break the bonds.
I am challenging every nurse to take up the baton on this one. If we, health care professionals cannot make the first stand on the nutrition value of America, then the general population have little to no hope.
How about it? Educate, rejuvinate, permeate.
.....and the fact that it is not biologically necessary to consume another species milk (we were meant to drink mom's milk and then be weaned), among other things.http://www.notmilk.com/ is an interesting site. It's a bit propagandish, but so is the dairy industry, so read with an open mind, but with a grain of salt too.
There's good and bad in just about everything isn't there.
TWEEEEEEETY!!!! I'm glad you wrote this. It's rare to hear someone mention this fact. No other animal drinks another species milk.

Yep, the old "kids HAVE to have milk growing up!" is not necessarily true. There are cultures in Asia and Africa that don't any milk after they are weaned from mothers milk and they do just fine. In fact they are lower on the list of osteporosis than America, which I believe has the 4th highest rate per capita.
When you think about it, it is a bit strange to drink another species milk that was intended for baby cows. Then again it's strange to eat a product of a chicken's menstral cycle too. :roll
However, as I said, Americans as a rule eat so poorly, I am not ready to advocate everyone gives up milk.
I have always had a natural dislike and disdain for cow's milk. I don't drink it and don't even like it on my cereal. But I am guilty of LOVING cheese and naturally-whipped cream, so I am certainly no purist. But there are lots of studies showing it may be unwise to consume cow's milk, certainly as babies, but even as adults. Good mention, Tweety.
We're the only species that has most of the food choices that we do. Our animal friends don't sit around discussing whether to have spaghetti or pot roast for dinner.
LOL so true. But then we are the rare species that enjoys sex for something beyond procreation, also.(Note I did not say "only" cause there animals that seem to enjoy sexual behaviors). But, we do know Humans are special or unique in so many ways.

Well, get a load of this, tgibson: I'm 5'2", 215 pounds and my diet is almost exclusively vegetarian. Yea, I know cokes and white bread aren't part of a balanced diet but I think there are also things a person who believes they have all the answers about diet and health can realize.
For example, why, in spite of my obesity, my vital signs are consistently WNL? My BP rarely is over 120/70. This is probably due in part to my kidneys being nonrenin reactive. I also don't have fallen arches, my hair is very thick and shiny, and I have good skin.
Being thin (and vegetarian) doesn't guarantee good health. Most people I know with major health problems are not overweight. And as a matter of fact I do know of some very overweight elderly who have only minor health conditions that are controlled with mild meds.

Yes, but soy substitutes are not any better. Loaded with pseudoestrogens. Asians don't use soy like people pushing soy products would have you believe.
I guess Americans like milk products because somewhere along the way we discovered it tastes good, and we can get to it. My cat certainly doesn't say, "no thanks" when offered warm whole milk. But, he won't touch soy milk or fat free milk. And my dog loves fresh yogurt. (Of course my dog also likes fresh cat turd) Oh well.
Unfortunately, it seems every food I love, is thought to be bad for me by someone or some study. There is nothing better than fresh full-fat-full-calorie-full-taste yogurt ... Yummy! (Not that stuff we buy in grocery stores).
But, the ADA version of the perfect diabetic diet does make patient teaching easy: it's really quite simply, if it tastes good, SPIT IT OUT!
