hello nurses or nurses-to-be!!!
iam new to this site and iam seriously considering to go to nursing school; the only problem is that i am not sure which cuny school to go to!!!! everyone recommends me to go to the school they've been to becuz they all have very good nursing programs...:stone but does that mean ALL CUNYs are good? i've asked so much people they told me the following CUNY's got really good programs:
-College of Staten Island (too far for me....)
-Hunter College ( heard that it's hard to get in or out!)
-NYCity Tech ( Iam going there right now but so far the Bio + Chem iam taking is......let say it's much easier then i thought...)
-LaGuardia CC (but except for this one girl i knew that goes there, no one else know about this school!?)
-BMCC ( heard that there's a waiting list.....but is it good?)
Anyone that have been to or goes to any above-mentioned CUNY (or other CUNYs) please please please i need to know what you think:rolleyes:!! i've tried to find it online to see which school has better programs but ofcuz i didnt find anything at all.....a few experienced nurses that i've asked all tells me to go to hunter (seems that they only know this one school??:stone ?)
I understand that it's hard to say which school has better programs but at least if you guys can nicely reply me i have an idea who went (or goes) where and gives me a little insight to these programs....or does anyone know any websites that tells actually which school is better?
iam so nervous about applying to the wrong program and i really want a program that gets you the hands-on experence or lots of clinial hours.
A thousand thanks for anyone that replys!!!:)
hi im graduating from hunter this year and i think it's a pretty good program. most of the profs are really good and really care about the students. i think every nursing program has its weaknesses, but clinical skill preparation is not hunter's weakness. in the end, you get what you put in. i think i learned a lot and while no program will prepare you completely for the real world, hunter does try hard. i also think going to a private school for nursing is a waste of money. i got scholarships that pretty much made my education free, and i already got a couple of job offers. PM any specific questions you have!
CUNY Kingsborough CC in Brooklyn is a good program. The instructors and clinicals were great. No real complaints here. I feel confident that they prepared me well to be a safe and competent RN. The NCLEX pass rates are yearly above 90% and another good barometer of the program is that the incoming seats keep increasing. The most recent incoming class was 100 students. Study hard for the prereqs and do well as this will be a good measure of acceptance and success in the program. Even though it is a 2 year program, my classmates (NUR Program, not the other classes) were some of the brightest people I have met. Many have BS in other fields, some were ex premeds, some were advance science degree holders in other countries. In conclusion, I would recommend this program to anyone.
I am attending Bronx Community College. Older student going for LPN starting in fall, I have an associates degree already, Going LPN to RN gateway. I should have gone straight to RN but was nervous about being out of school so long. Anyway it is very competitive, the classes fill up fast so you have to jump on the registration quick and the nursing dept is like 0 help. Basically your on your own Oh well we will see how it goes, anyway after I get my LPN I am thinking of leaving and going to Cochran in Yonkers or MT Vernon Hospital both of which have an accelerated LPN to RN program. It was so hard to get in the LPN program i don't know if I want to go through that again.

I attended Lehman College and do not recommend you go there. I find that with all the CUNY schools the professors make it very difficult for obvious reasons, but some more than others. I have had a lot of RN's from the two year colleges (BMCC, Hostos) in my courses and it seems the feelings of disgust run mutually in all the CUNY colleges. The old really eat their young unfortunately. Lehman is now implementing a new entrance exam, which you haveto pay for, on the computer and going to use that as the basis of admission and weigh the pre-req's less. I do not know about other schools but in your final semester, Lehman Nursing program will do all they can to prevent you from taking the state boards because their passing rate is not as high as it was a semester ago. They require you to take the National League for Nursing Exam, which is a general exam which does include many of the things you may not be taught. I do not know of other colleges, but this college is short on staff and will hire just about anyone to teach a course. If you do not get the score they want you to get on the NLN they will not give you permission to take the NCLEX. There are students that are still waiting from a year ago to have the school send their info to Albany.
Many of the professors are rude and constantly throw in your face that they can fail you at any given point in time. If you have a personality conflict with a professor they can fail you and according to the WONDERFUL department chair she does not want to hear any complaints about her holier than though staff. There are only four professors I know that I consider to conduct themselves as professionals. I am not familiar with the professors that teach the Grad school level courses. I could continue going on and on and on and on about this college. I, in a way, regret going there. I was better off going to a private college and maybe I would have been treated with some dignity and respect. I feel like CUNY is welfare and the professor's make you feel like you are begging them for a grade you deserve.
