The Best and Worst things about being a male nurse

Alright, let's try to drum up some conversation in here, huh? How about it guys? What do you hate and love about your job?

As she was massaging me, on of her arm went down my chest and she was like wops!s, slipped there. I felt so uncomfortable because I have a gf and I am loyal to her. Therefore, when she really stopped the massage and started feeling on me, I wast so nervous that I was like I need a fresh air. And I heard from other coworkers that she has a crush on me. Man there were so many girls who had crush on me on that facility that all my guy coworkers were just filled with envy. I am considered to be a handsome guy, but what I don't understand is why me? I mean there were other guys in the facility.

And my wallet is too small for my hundred dollar bills and these diamond shoes are killing me! LOL JK.

Truth be told though, the first mistake there was allowing her to give you a massage in the first place. That can lead to all sorts of trouble for both parties.

What do you expect me to say? I only stated what happened.

Let's see...LoL

One of the more beneficial or better aspects as to being a CNA (I haven't quite had a chance to use my nursing students skills as I haven't been on clinical yet) is when I walk into work after a few days off, and I have both staff members and residents who have been looking for me and wondering when I would be in again; looking forward to me working with them...well, then that makes everything worth while. Also, when I walk into a particular resident's room and their face just lights up, nothing brings a brighter smile to my face.

One of the things I've had to work through, throughout the three years I've been a CNA is when I start working with female patients/residents/clients. They can be so apprehensive about a male working with them, that it is often difficult to assist them or to even try to help them.

Almost all the time I am more then happy to step out and let a female assist them (althought it can be disconcerting at times), generally when they become use to my presence they let me work with them. If I find one that just won't let me help them because I'm a "young boy who shouldn't see that", I typically handle it in one of two ways. I usually just let it be, or if we're strapped for time and short of personnel and I'm the only one available, I'll walk in the room and say humourously, "Sorry...but at the moment, I'm all you've got!" And typically that's when things change and I start working with them all the time. It's actually kind of funny because it are these individuals who end up becoming my best patients.

I usually have no problems at work because of my bubbly personality...you go in there with an open mind and an easy manner...things usually turn out well.

Kindest Regards, Vinnie

I agree with Vinnie. I have been an aide in a critical care unit for 2 years now. I think the key to patients refusing is to act professional and don't act like it is uncomfortable to you. There is nothing that they have that you have not seen before anyway. "Parts is parts" as a wise nurse once told me.:) I'm 24 and look a little younger than that, so I have the same problem, but only once has the patient not come around once they got to know me.

I have met women who are incredible nurses and men who are incredible nurses and I have seen the opposite from both sexes also. Being male or female usually does carry inherent advantages and disadvantages, but we shouldn't ignore them and say we are all the same either. People are individuals, I have seen women who can outlift most men and men who couldn't lift to save their lives.

An advantage is that most of the time my presense is a little more assertive to a patient than a female's. This is an advantage with confused patients who are combative, they tend to stop fighting when I walk in the room. The older women who are fearful of falling are also less apprehensive when I'm helping transfer them, even if a woman could do it just as well.

The major disadvantage for me is that most don't think I care about people as much as I'm in the career for the money. Honestly I don't think it is worth the money if you hate the career. But I love my job, I love helping people.

I'm enjoying being a man and earning the respect of patients and coworkers as a nurse. I'm fresh out of BSN school as a second career.

That said, fellas, we have lots of work to do to keep up with the ladies. I was highly impressed by the ability and experience level of the women I have gone to school with and the level of intensity I've seen them work.

I'm back in the gym to keep up my stamina, and try and sleep 7h a night to keep up.

I find that the only way to get respect in the profession is simply, to earn it.

NEGATIVES: finding scrubs that are stylish for dudes is not easy. How bout some harley davidson scrub tops?

Thanks,

Joe

To me, there are 2 main things. First, the most difficult thing you could do as a male nurse would be to work on the OB floor (good luck ;)) and second, which is part of the first, is worrying about sexual harassment and other accusations. Female nurses/doctors can enter any room and perform an assessment or simple procedure by themselves, however the wise male nurse would bring a female nurse in the room with his female patient for an assessment or anything that is that personal.

i dont mind helping,,,,iam a nurse and 5ft 10, 225 lbs solid,,,,but even big muscular guys have backs as well.....and despite the physique, they break down and hurt.....and the first time you say no to someone....they usually hold a grudge (i never have said no, but you can tell people freak out if u say hold on a little bit...) just stating the truth....if patients are so big to lift, and hoyers dont work....the responsability has to be shared,,,any way you look at it, it is genderizing...

best things about male nursing? hmm...

...well if you're single it's pretty awesome. that's bout it.

worst thing...

...some clinical instructors will try to destroy you just because you aren't a girl. been there.

Dude, don't flatter yourself. It's THEM! I'm an old toad and constantly have to tell the 'lady' nurses to keep their hands to themselves.

What do you hate and love about your job?[Mabaso/QUOTE]As far as my experience is concerned, being a male nurse is so challenging. First of all, many clients mistake us for doctors hence expecting more knowledge from us than from our female colleagues. Secondly, nursing was traditionally assigned to females and therefore would tell us there is no nurse when actually we are there. Lastly, most clients believe that males were not gifted in caring.

The ratio for male nurses in hospitals is very low, but don't worry about it as long as you are there to care for them. You know you are a nurse and thats what counts! I'm a freshman in college and I was shadowing my aunt whose a nurse and I've seen quite a lot of nurses both LVN and RN nurses and they were awesome!

Men is way better caregivers than women are! We're just strong and polite! Ha!

I agree with you in this but in the university I attend, they praise male nurses and encourage them all the time. It is a christian university, thats why I feel awesome when I go to nursing classes!

Ha! Its an easy way to get a wife!
