The Best Books for Nursing Students

Published

I am going to the book store tomorrow and was thinking about getting some books to supplement my textbooks for nursing school. I don't have specific problems in any areas, but I would definitely like to get an NCLEX review book to start studying (I still have about a year to go before I graduate, but I figure it doesn't hurt to start early).

What is the best NCLEX book for someone looking for general review?

Also, anyone take the GRE? I would like to go to grad school after my BSN and need to take the GRE at some point. What are the best study books for the GRE?

Are there any other great books out there that have helped you through nursing school? I have textbooks out the wazoo and pretty much every handbook Mosby's offers.

Thanks!

Mosby is good, but I have found Lippinscott or Saunders to be better. Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-RN, 8th edition is a pretty good one, also has a CD that comes with it. Saunders puts out a good one as well. Just make sure you get the most recent updated version. Good luck with everything!

I really like my Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN. I have the 3rd edition, but I hear the 4th is even better, with more SATA questions.

This book was a lifesaver when I was struggling to come up with nursing diagnoses and make concept maps for care plans. Nurse's Pocket Guide: Diagnoses, Prioritized Interventions, and Rationales. The ISBN is 9780803614802.

I'm not sure if anyone still uses this book or not anymore. My mother told me about it, and said it was very helpful to her while she was in nursing school (for LVN) back in the early 1970's: The Merck Manual (She still has her old one she used back then, but I'm sure there's a recently updated edition!)

Do nursing students still use this? I would think so, but I wanted to get some insight.

Thanks!
