What is the "art" of nursing? Is it just a buzzword? Do you actually have time for it? Do you even think about it? Was it even mentioned in school?
Ha ha. No, I don't. Take my hand...I read Utopia years ago--is that the More you meant (I've seen it spelled both ways)?Haven't read that Moore, but will, someday when I'm not sleeping with my head on my med-surg book, which is as close as I get to reading, these days.Thomas Moore, with two o's and not the author of Utopia, talks about the spirit and art and beauty and work. I thought maybe you had read him too. Your words seemed a lot similiar to his philosophy of the soul, the "investing one's soul".
Most of my feelings about art evolved during late-night talks with my dad, who paints and plays/loves music. I'm more inclined toward literature, although I enjoy all arts.
As far as the healing arts, all of you on this board have been a huge influence, including (especially?) those with whom I've disagreed. We get into a bit at school, too.
In psych nsg, this summer, they said we would learn more about ourselves than about our patients, and I believe they were right. At 48 yrs old, I know myself pretty well, but me as a nurse is a pretty new and somewhat unexpected phenomenon. So far, most of the surprises have been happy ones, although I do at times seemed destined never to miss the chance to learn some humility.
