I'm only 6 months into my first RN job. Today, they let me go early due to low census, and I had to give report on 2 patients to a new grad. This new grad had previously asked me to come and get him if I had anything going on that he might not have seen before. Anway, I digress, he took FOREVER to give report to another nurse, then one of his patients needed pain medicine, yada yada. I was getting so irritated inside, because I was wandering the halls looking for something to do. I kept telling him to take his time and come to me when he had time. In my head I was thinking, "Seriously, he only has one patient."
Well that was me. THAT WAS ME only a few months ago. It's crazy how much we learn in this field, and so awesome that I stopped myself and recognized myself in him.
........now that's a cool feeling
Can you briefly explain how Canada's system handles elderly people.. like dialysis for over age 65? 70? I have heard horror stories but never knew anyone to ask for the truth. Do you have home health, hospice?
Are you serious? We dialyize anyone that needs it. Ever wrestled with a 90 yo dementia patient who is scheduled for hemodialysis 3 x a week?
Some people would say that our elderly get better healthcare than some of the younger citizens because they are very aware of what they are "entitled" to because they've "paid taxes for years". Yes, there are waitlists for some procedures but they are done at no cost to the patient. Demented and need bi-lateral cateract surgery? Done. Hip replacements? Done. It's easier for a senior to get a knee replacement than it is for 40something.
Of course we have homecare. It's a rapidly growing field as the government has realized beds are unblocked in acute care when you can send someone home.
Of course we have hospice and major pallative care programmes.
Stop believing Glenn Beck.
I am sorry, I was not trying to be stupid or silly.. My dad was on dialysis still 81 then got a transplant..kidney worked but immunosuppresants killed him,, but I swear a fcaility in Florida told him in Canada he would have just been left to die. I don't listen to politics so I just wanted to ask someone who really knew.. Thanks for answering me.
