Texas Tech 2nd degree BSN program 2015

Published

Hey I was looking for a new thread on the people applying for the Texas Tech 2015 accelerated 2nd degree BSN program, specifically Austin, and couldn't find one so I thought I would start one. All the previous threads have been really helpful. Is there anyone applying for the Austin location?? Anyone already have their CNA or planning on getting it soon??

We all used federal loans and then private loans (I used Sallie Mae private loans) for anything not covered by the federal loans. I actually maxed out my loan amount to pay off my wife's graduate school loans with the lower interest undergrad loans.

misslo84 - According to Merlin, interviews are supposed to begin mid to late August with notifications of acceptance going out in September. I am applying to the Lubbock cohort so I don't know if it varies with location or not...

han14ash: It is the same for the Austin cohort.

It looks like the people who applied last year had a deadline of October 1st and found out if they were going to be interviewed October 11th so I wonder if we will find out just as soon or more toward the end of the month/early Aug.

Hopefulprayers: I read that the tuition is going to be $22,000 total for 2015 not including transportation, living, food, ect

I doubt I am supposed to say this, but I was told to keep my schedule open on Aug. 27, 29, and 29 for interviews. Typically, admission offers/denials are sent out 5-7 days after interviews. As current students, we are required to attend at least one of those days so prospective students can chat with us after their interview. Hope to see ya'll. :)

Hi @kaseyroo!

So you said that interviews will mostly likely be August 27th and 29th or 27th-29th? Also, what did everybody score on their TEAS V? I scored a 73.3 and I didn't study at all because I had so much going on. I just wander if that is competitive? thanks!

Hey lele,

If I may jump in, interviews are for 3 days, so 27, 28, and 29.

As for your Teas, it will be a bit on the low side, but I don't think it will take you out of contention. If memory serves from last year, I think the lowest they will consider is a 70 and a competitive score is around an 80. I know of a few people in my cohort that got in the 70's so I think as long as you have other strong points you will do fine. Take me for example, I had one of the lower gpa's (around 3.2, maybe the lowest in my cohort), but one of the higher Teas (around 94). So I think the key is that if you have weak spots, try to stress your strong points.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much @flyonn! That helps me get an idea. I still worry about my TEAS V scores. I do have patient care experience as a tech on the med/surg floor and I went to Africa for two weeks in may so finger crossed I can land at least an interview! I wonder when we hear about interviews...

@lele8907,

I can agree with @flyonn that your TEAS V may be a bit low, but it won't necessarily keep you out of the race. I would definitely highlight all of your experience if you get an interview.

I got my interview offer about two weeks before I actually interviewed.

I have a question for those who have were or are enrolled in the Austin cohort...**should I get accepted** which location/unit do you recommend I should try for (with my coach) if I already know I want to be a psych nurse? I would love to find clinicals that weren't as concentrated on med-surg--I know that sounds horrible---but 24 hours of med-surg/week sounds like a nightmare to someone who knows they love psych nursing! (don't get me wrong, I'll do it but just wondering if there were coach options where you do a LITTLE less med-surg. Does that make sense? Thanks for your time!

@cinders_gr

You don't have a choice in your clinical site. Your primary faculty will place you based on your level of prior experience (i.e., our former paramedic is in the ICU and I am in Cardiopulmonary/IMC), your geographic location, and your personality. There are a variety of different sites, like ICU, IMC, telemetry, medical-surgical, rehabilitation, etc. The majority of the students in the program are on a medical-surgical unit because that is the way the program is designed. The foundation of this program is medical-surgical because that's the foundation of this profession, FYI. You do get to do a short psych rotation during the summer, but that's it. Honestly, I would be a lot more worried about getting a coach that fits your personality and will create a conducive learning environment. Your coach can make or break your whole experience. Just my two cents.

@kaseyroo @flyonn Will you go over the interview process and what it was like for you? What to expect, tips, questions, etc? I've read quite a bit about the process on other threads but would appreciate any additional input either of you can offer.

Thanks in advance!
