Texas Tech-Accelerated BSN Spring 2020

Published

I haven't seen a thread for those of us applying May 1st to the January 2020 cohort. I'm wondering how heavily they weigh the TEAS. Also, I have heard as long as you meet all criteria they typically give you an interview. Has anyone else heard this? I really like how they take a holistic approach to grant admissions. I'm wanting to apply to UTA but I feel like the main way you get extra points is by attending school there which I did not do! We'll see!

Hello, is there anyone in Odessa nursing program that I can contact. I just got accepted and have a couple questions. Thanks ?

@olividav21 I read somewhere that you have tests every day for the first month. Is this true? I'm bit scared, honestly. How are you managing everything?

@DCV I'm in the 2021 cohort and can give you a rough idea of testing schedule. What you're probably thinking of is the daily quizzes in Basic Skills (the first two weeks of the program) - they're not full tests, just quizzes over the material we'll be going over that day. They give you the material beforehand, you quiz over it, then you go practice it in class that day.

Outside of Basic Skills, all other classes are conducted online. The most tests we have had in a week so far is three, and that was because we had a really bizarre weather episode where people were out of power for multiple days. Everything from that week got pushed to the next week, so we had 3 tests total plus one quiz.

A "normal" testing schedule so far has been about one quiz per week and 1-2 exams per week. Quizzes are shorter and sometimes open-book, whereas exams are longer and proctored.

Hope that helps!

@olividav21 would you (or anyone else) know of students who were accepted but had minimal medical experience? I've been a teacher for 8 years. I have my CNA certification and BLS but have about 20 hours of medical volunteer work. Please let me know. I need peace of mind.

@olividav21 Thank you for giving us guidance and answers. It eases and helps all of us. Thank you and I hope you do super well in your classes! ❤️

I spoke to a Tech advisor and she said that I should be ready to put in 60-80 hours a week. 80 hours a week....is this true for anyone else? I'm not sure how you would put 80 hours a week in.

That’s what they told me too and it hasn’t been the case for me personally. I usually did two 12 hour shifts per week at the hospital for clinical and 4-6 hours a day the other weekdays. I always took at least Sunday off (Saturday too if I wasn’t in clinical) so I’d say I averaged more like 35-40 hours a week most weeks. (Some weeks closer to 25-30 if I only did one clinical day.) For context, I got 5 As and 2 high Bs the first semester.

I would say yes. I spend most of my time studying so 60+ hours sounds about right. But it also depends on how you learn. So that’s probably going to be a personal journey. I’d say do not underestimate how rigorous the program is and how much you will have to do. Think about it this way. It's a 3 year program in 11 months. So there’s going to be a large amount of time spent doing school work + once you start doing clinicals.

Thank you @allipalmer and @kinsey. @allipalmer, would you mind if I private messaged you to ask some questions about your studying habits and tips? Thank you again guys!

I'm new applicant for the upcoming Spring 2022. So how does the lecture and exam work? are they recorded lecture or zoom live? regarding the lecture exams, are they given in campus when everything goes back to normal?

@Jo222 there really aren't traditional lectures in this program. We're given modules to complete, reading assignments, etc. and very occasionally there is a pre-recorded "lecture" of sorts in there but not very often. We're then tested on all of that material. There is usually an optional review session (which we've been doing via Zoom) with the retention counselor to help you prepare for the upcoming exam as well.

The exams for us have been via lockdown browsers (Respondus and Proctorio) where you can't use materials (they can view your screen and you have to have a webcam on so they can see you to proctor remotely while you test). So the exam will still be at a specific scheduled time, but you take it at home instead of at a proctoring location (which is what they did pre-covid). No idea if they plan to go back to in-person testing or not.
