Texas State University Fall 2015

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hey everyone! There is no thread for fall 2015 yet (maybe it's a little early), so I decided to be the one to create it today. The application deadline is January 15. Right now, I am super nervous about the TEAS V. I plan on taking it sometime within the next month or so.

Current stats:

Overall GPA - 3.77

Science GPA 4.0

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us in this thread! Do you have any advice regarding the persuasive essay required in the application?

Goodluck on the TEAS! (:

The persuasive essay- yeah I have some advice. Don't stress over it. I spoke with one of the professors who reads them and asked her how much sway it actually had for an applicant and she said it provided the weakest evidence of who the student was. In reality, someone besides the student could have written it. I worked so hard on mine that that bit of info was quite a blow. One thing I will say with regards to writing in nursing school is cut the fluff. Don't use a ton of descriptive or extra words. Treat the questions you must answer for the essay like a rubric and answer concisely. You don't have to make it cold or anything, just don't make it a melodramatic read. My first draft was so over the top dramatic- I think I cried when I wrote it.

Wow that is the opposite of everything I've learned in every English/writing class I've ever had hahahah. Thank you! That is definitely a relief for me. How much do you think the volunteering/experience portion and the references count?

I think that the references do count, but the biggest thing they look at are your TEAS scores and your prerequisite grades (especially science). I was perfect in my science grades, had a 3.9+ GPA and had good TEAS scores. Also, my transcript was clean. I had no classes I had to retake. They look at that especially with the science classes. I was accepted in the first round of acceptances. I had absolutely no volunteering/experience so I can't speak as to how that influences acceptance.

You are absolutely 100% right that what I told you is opposite what you have been told in other writing classes. Nursing school is APA, not MLA. If you are a good creative writer it is a HUGE adjustment. Don't worry about it. We all have to go through it.

Does anyone know if you have retaken a class, how it is calculated into your GPA? I emailed the advisor and she provided me a cryptic message, "A course taken at texas state must be repeated at texas state to be counted as a repeat. A course taken for transfer credit must be repeated as a transfer credit to count as a repeat."

I have never attended texas state just plan on applying to the nursing school. I already have my bachelors, and retook a course at a cc. does anyone know how this works?

Hey everyone! I am also applying to the fall 2015 TX State SON. My stats are not up to date so I am waiting to post them until late December. I already took the TEASV back in February when I was applying to Texas Techs 2nd degree BSN program and I had not studied at all so they aren't worth discussing. I am taking the exam December 30th and have been studying really hard for them! So hopefully it all pays off.

My GPA is overal a 3.0 which isn't good but my science is a 3.5 without taking Biology yet. That is the only class I have left to take. I graduated from Texas Tech University Spring of 2014 with a bachelors in Human Sciences. I am a CNA and BLS certified. I am very nervous about getting in mostly because my GPAs but I hope that my new TEAS scores and experience plus the references I have pay off.

pixielady it is so nice of you to take time out of your schedule to talk with us! I was wondering what clinicals are like as far as schedules? Also, how do you like the program in general?
