Texas State University Fall 2015
I think that the references do count, but the biggest thing they look at are your TEAS scores and your prerequisite grades (especially science). I was perfect in my science grades, had a 3.9+ GPA and had good TEAS scores. Also, my transcript was clean. I had no classes I had to retake. They look at that especially with the science classes. I was accepted in the first round of acceptances. I had absolutely no volunteering/experience so I can't speak as to how that influences acceptance. You are absolutely 100% right that what I told you is opposite what you have been told in other writing classes. Nursing school is APA, not MLA. If you are a good creative writer it is a HUGE adjustment. Don't worry about it. We all have to go through it.

The persuasive essay- yeah I have some advice. Don't stress over it. I spoke with one of the professors who reads them and asked her how much sway it actually had for an applicant and she said it provided the weakest evidence of who the student was. In reality, someone besides the student could have written it. I worked so hard on mine that that bit of info was quite a blow. One thing I will say with regards to writing in nursing school is cut the fluff. Don't use a ton of descriptive or extra words. Treat the questions you must answer for the essay like a rubric and answer concisely. You don't have to make it cold or anything, just don't make it a melodramatic read. My first draft was so over the top dramatic- I think I cried when I wrote it.

Texas State University Fall 2015
Hey ladies- I am currently a senior at Texas State in the nursing program. I can answer some of your questions. Yes, you need to be accepted to Texas State first. It doesn't take much time at all- I think it was about 3 weeks for me. Get your application in ASAP. Those who have not taken the TEAS yet- schedule it ASAP. The ATI site where you have to register sells tests that let you practice- these practice tests are exactly like the actual tests. I worked my way through several TEAS practice books and those tests were the only thing that really prepared me. They allow you to take each test twice and explained why you got it wrong. Pay attention to those rationales. Good luck to you all! I will be checking in on this thread from time to time, so if you have more questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Tx State Fall 2013
I am officially going crazy waiting. I drive by campus all the time (I am at ACC RR 3x per week) and have a horrible urge to park and spy. I am sure that would get me in, right? Peeking in the windows to try to discern their selection system?

Yeah, my best friend got hers a couple weeks after me. They were both sent on Tuesdays. Two of my other friends got theirs the same time as my best friend as well, also on a Tuesday. We have been trying to figure out how they did the send order, since she and I both have better than 3.9 GPA. I think the only difference was that my transcript was super clean with nothing to double check, and she had to drop Anatomy the first time. Those repeats do count against you, although its only slightly.

I got mine last month and did the background check on Monday. Yeah, the email bummed me out as well. Maybe that is the latest date they will be making the decision. I am hoping, like everyone else, that they send me a message earlier. I have three close friends who applied as well and we are all making each other crazy.

Hey everyone! I also applied to TX State. It's seven minutes from my house and I love the facilities. Did you ladies get your fast passes? Have you all been hopefully stalking stethoscopes and shoes like I have?
