UTMB BACC2 Spring 2011

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Just wanted to start a thread to see how many others have applied to the BACC2 program and hopefully we can keep track when interviews start, letters get sent, etc.

So, have you sent in your application, and when do you think you will first hear something? I know last year, interviews didn't start until October, but I have a feeling that they were still trying to play catch-up from Ike. Considering that some of the Fall 2010 applicants were contacted on March 1st for interviews when the application period ended Feb. 15th, I'm hoping that maybe August could be a possiblity for us to hear from UTMB. Any one else have thoughts about this?

Here's to all the BACC2 2011 applicants! Good luck! :D

Congratulations yall! We also have a facebook page thanks to Ejenkins

Hi Everyone!

It looks like this is a post compiled of people accepted into UTMB's Accelerated BSN Spring 2011 program. I too will be attending in January and am so excited! Will anyone else be living in Houston and making the drive for the weekly seminars? I have not looked online recently to check, but does anyone know when orientation will be?

Hope to hear back from y'all!

Awesome LonghornLK- congrats!! Orientation will be Jan. 4th-6th. That's all I know, the link they provided in the acceptance letter does not work (at least the last time I checked it). Question: is everyone purchasing their nursing supplies before orientation? Also, I've been thinking about this- is everyone using their own mobile device as their PDA or purchasing another device like an iPod Touch? Just curious, feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Congrats everyone!

LonghornLK - I live in the Heights area and will be commuting to Galveston as needed for class and seminars.

NLDN3 - I plan on using my iPhone as my PDA. With all of the stuff we have to buy - books, software, lab equipment, etc - I don't think another PDA is in my budget...unless Santa brings me one. ;) I am going to purchase the supplies as much as I can not just to spread it out.

Keep us posted if anyone finds out what the second week of school schedule will look like.

LonghornLK

I will be making the commute from the Clear Lake area.

NLDN3

I plan on using my Windows phone for the PDA software. Im also gonna try to get everything thats required ahead of time. Especially textbooks. textbooks.com, amazon.com, and half.com are gold mines for cheap books! Even the new ones are a little cheaper as well!

See you guys soon!

one of the faculty members emailed me back today concerning a question i had. i hope this helps some of you if you were wondering some of the same things:

"bacc2 students are on campus every tuesday throughout the program for an exam in the morning and discussion/seminar in the afternoon. you will also be required to attend labs/assessments 1-2 additional days/week during specific courses. in addition, you will be required to complete 3 clinical shifts/week in the galveston-houston area. shifts can be any date and any time you are not in class, and are 8-12 hours each. so once clinicals begin, approximately mid to late february, you would be required to be in this area 4 times/week with 1 class day and 3 shifts."

my question had been whether or not it would be feasible for me to consider commuting from the beaumont area. according to this information, it seems like it may be like a lot of time on the road, so i'll be making plans to relocate to the webster area or some place along i-45 with easy access into galveston or the medical center in houston.

does anyone know what kind of stethoscope we need? there are some impressive electronic models out there (take a peak at their video/demos). sorry, i am not sure if i can display trademarks here. these are electronic models and you can download the data (recorded heart beats) to a computer and analyze it. :nurse:

Thanks for sharing that info JThig!

hey, thanks jthig for passing along that email. i'm trying to decide between the traditional bsn at ut-houston and the bacc2 at utmb, and the number of times i would have to make the commute to galveston is a major consideration. i didn't realize that clinicals started so soon. a couple of quick questions. do you guys know if clinicals last for the remainder of the year? and are they able to assign students to clinical sites in the area of his/her choice? is anyone else trying to decide between those two programs? thanks so much for your help, guys.

mulligatawni - I remember asking my interviewer about the clinical locations and she said that they try their best to have you work in the area of your choice. I am not sure of the duration of the clinicals, but I assume they would last the majority of the year since this program is so short.

Hi Everyone! I'm new to the forum and will be joining you guys in the Bacc2 program in January. Congratulations and good luck to all of us!

I have a quick question about the hepatitis b vaccination requirement, and was hoping that someone could help me out with some information. I just got my admission email last week, and so I feel like I'm getting kind of a late start on all of this. I still haven't gotten my hep b series. I'm planning to get the first dose tomorrow, then I can take the second one in a month--but that still leaves the third dose. From what I've heard, we start clinicals in February and I'm super worried that I won't be able to participate without the third dose and titer. I called Student Wellness, and the lady I spoke with said that I should just take the two doses and have the third later, but what if this was the wrong information? Is anyone else in the same boat? I know I could get the accelerated vaccination schedule, but I called a few places and its EXPENSIVE! However, I am willing to shell out the $300 if that's my only option.

Sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you guys can give me!

I'm not sure if that is correct or not. I know the immunization form we have to fill out says Hep B full series, so I'd guess they'd want all three. Maybe you could call the School of Nursing and ask?

Worse case, the accelerated series should get everything done in time since the 3rd shot would probably be in late January, before clinicals start. It is expensive but if you have insurance, I'd call and ask about it getting covered in some way. I've heard some insurances will cover immunizations and/or titers if you say it's for nursing school/med school etc.

Your last option might be to call some places that offer cheap immunizations like the Harris County Hospital District if you are in the Houston area already (or the local county hospital/health district wherever you live). They may not offer the accelerated hep b series, but it doesn't hurt to try. I know most counties have really cheap immunization options, so there is always a chance they might be able to help.
