New "09" Fall Lone Star North Harris Students

U.S.A. Texas

CONGRATULATIONS :yeah:to all that got accepted into the nursing program at Lone Star College and also the ones put on as alternates (hang in there, I have read good news for alternates in previous threads). Its been a long hard road for some of us and some its prabably been easy. I wanted to start a new thread for North Harris fall "09" students (or who every wants to comment or give tips.) Reading from previous threads I understand nursing school is not an easy tasks. So, hopefully this thread can help us entering into this new life we are about to experience for the next 2 yrs.

I was hoping we can form a study group to jump start us off before school starts. I heard that students usually have their group going by the first day of class. I am a little shy when it comes to meeting new people, but once I am comfortable I fit in just fine. I know from the previous thread a few of us admitted our shyness in a new environment. So, hopefully this thread can help us jump start our group...

Have anyone start working on their CPR, shots, physical and etc. Do anyone have to take pharm this summer? As for me, I have to take pharm this summer. I wish I had already taken it earlier so I could have enjoyed my summer.

Are the uniforms for NH like Kingwood's...White tops and Teal bottoms??

Yes, white tops and teal bottoms.

Thanks TeeRN2b!

Does anyone know if there is a special form from NH that needs to be signed by your doctor for the physical exam? Also....Do we use the Varicella form that they have on their website for our doctor or parent to sign stating that we had chickenpox as a child? I know that I could probably wait until orientation, but I wanted to try and get as much done as possible!

Lizzienick311 - there is a special form, but I suggest you wait until orientation. They will tell you everything you need to know and you will have time to get everything taken care of before they ask for the paperwork to be turned in. I can't remember how long they give you, but it was plenty of time.

Congrats on getting in guys!!! There is still a lot of hard work ahead of you, but you made it this far and should be very proud of yourselves. I'm a nursing II student going onto nursing III:yeah:, and I wish we had upper level students give us some insight on beginning nursing school. WE are here for you, so please feel free to ask any questions. I will see you at orientation to give you some info on Camp Wanna Win (takes place in August), this is where you will get to talk to nursing students already in the program and ask about anything you need to know, buy, etc. We will let you know what books and supplies you will need the most, show you what math you need to focus on (you need to pass the math tests in order to pass the semester, not a grade but you need an 80 average to pass) and we will give out prizes (drug books, etc). Hope to see you guys soon, get lots of sleep, sun and relaxation before the semester starts and gets crazy

Hi all, I would like to join the group too! I'll be starting in the fall too! CONGRATS TO ALL AND ALTERNATES, HANG IN THERE!

Does anyone know exactly how many days we will be in class?

I mean after the first two weeks? i work fri-sat-sun and I'm wondering if I'll have to cut back a day or quit.

Also, what have you guys heard about the program at North Harris?

How is it structured and all that.... I like to know what I'm in for :)

Hey Demm.. Congrats for your acceptance into North Harris Nursing Program,, I am glad you want to be part of the group,, the more the better.. Demm, depending on which classes you sign up for, if I remember correctly from nursing I, you will either have clinical on a Wednesday or Thursday from 7-5 (some clinical instructors like for you to be at the clinical site at 0630). Lecture was on Monday and Tuesday starting at 0800 till 1030 or 1100. Then you will either have lab on Monday or Tuesday following lecture for about an hour and a half, or following lab after lecture. Example: I had lecture monday and tuesday, lab on tuesday after lecture, wednesday off, thursday clinical, then every other friday was a test (sometimes it was every friday thanks to hurricane Ike). My advice, if you can, try to sign up for clinical on wednesday, that way you have thursday off to study all day for the test on friday. I hated having to come home from clinical on thursday exhausted and still had to study for the test the next day. I passed, but just my 2 cents =)

My first semester I had an adjunct clincial teacher, which is ok, they just aren't at the school like the other full time faculty. But all lectures are taught by full time faculty. Like you will have one or two teachers lecture for 2 weeks (monday and tuesday) then you take a test that following friday. So you basically have 2 weeks for each test. First semester is mostly patients in rehab (knee, hip surgery, strokes, etc), so a lot of geriatrics and "cleaning" up. Don't be shy and do as much ADL care as possible, it really helps with the second semester. As for working... some people do, some people dont, if you can afford not to work, then take the first semester off and see how it works for you. Working and if you have a family to take care of is possible, with time management. Let me know if there is anything else.
