Texas is driving me crazy!!!

What are you guys doing to increase NPs rights in Texas? Your state's NP organization needs to get on it, push your lobbyist, attend legislative meetings. It takes time but NPs are in high regard right now. I'm personally not optimistic this will last so I'd get on it asap.

Hi all,

I have been nurse for about 15yrs now and on my early 40s. Now I am thinking to go back to school for Post Masters -NP Program as I already have MSN. I have been working mostly as a bedside nurse in different units-med/surg/ortho/nuro/onco. I also have worked as a case manager and currently working as a medical record Utilization Review nurse. I am happy for what I am doing right now, but it doesn't pay well. I miss patient interaction, as well as I want to be competent with medical knowledge and nursing skills.

I have been looking to different Online colleges-GCU, Maryville, and Texas A&M-CC. But not sure which is better.

I also have dilemma on FNP or Acute care gerontology FNP.

Please help me with valuable suggestion.

Do not get a gerontology NP unless you only want to work in a nursing home!! Legally you can not care for anyone who isn't a geriatric ! Same thing goes for acute care, if you only want to work in a hospital acute care program is for you. But, if you ever decide to work in an office or a minute clinic you'll have to go back for your FNP. I have a FNP and I can treat anyone (infant, geri, etc) and I can work anywhere (office, hospital, clinic). Best choice I've ever made was to get my FNP. Good luck.

Texas is driving me crazy! The TMB has so much bargaining power to keep APRN's under their thumb here despite articles like this as well as the VA's initiative to provide better access to care. I'm going to have to be on antipsychotics soon!

I know circumstances are different for everyone. But as a Texan I can't see staying here if I get my NP here. Why would any NP WANT to be in a red state vs a green one? I like Texas, but I have no ties here.

I hear you. My situation is pretty sweet though. Maybe it's because I'm a guy, I don't know. But the company I work for treats me as a peer. With the exception of equal pay for equal services, however, my salary is much better than the average NP. The documentation to satisfy the delegation agreement in Texas is a joke. So for me I'm kinda in an independent type position, but not really.

AGACNP is the way to go working with 14yrs and up in TX. Plus you can stay in specialty clinics like cardiology clinic, nephrology, Ortho or even just internal medicine clinic. Best wishes the sky is the limit í ½í¸€

My state has an awesome NP organization- those ladies don't let anyone push them around. In the past three years they've added CNS as a recognized type of APRN PLUS got rid of our stupid "in name only" attestations with our collaborating physicians. They are organized, take charge, and they get stuff done. No doubt it has made a huge difference in our independence.
