Hi all!
Didn't see a thread started for spring 2020 so I thought I would start one! The application opens soon, yay!
So a little about me, I have a previous bachelors degree from the University of Texas. I have 2 prerequisites left to complete (statistics and A&P II). My nursing science GPA is 3.8 and I take the HESI in a few weeks. I am applying for the Round Rock campus, I live in Austin now and am a stay at home mom while finishing up my prerequisites. I am so nervous! I do not currently have any hospital experience or volunteer work which I hoping to find somewhere soon to start. Would love to hear from anyone else applying to the program ?
Hi Everyone!
I'm applying to Texas A&M's Second Degree BSN program for Spring 2021 too. I am a 34 year old married mom of 3 little girls with a bachelor's in biology and two associate degrees. I've enjoyed reading your stats, so here are mine:
Overall prereq GPA: 3.59 to 3.7, depending on whether or not my repeat classes from other schools due to expired credits (why do classes expire after 5 years??) are averaged out. NursingCAS stated that courses taken from other schools were not considered repeats, but I'm not sure if this is valid.
Nursing science GPA: 3.44 to 3.87, again depending on above.
HESI Cumulative Score: 94.8%, 900 critical thinking
Breakdown: 96% reading, 96% grammar, 96% A&P, 94% math, 92% vocab & general knowledge. I was annoyed because my calculator didn't work when I was taking the HESI! This was reported, but I don't know if there's anything that can be done. I was scoring 100% on the math section of practice exams, so I was upset that my score was so low on this section. A nursing admissions counselor advised me that my overall HESI score of 94.8% is still considered competitive, however.
I applied via NursingCAS on the day the application window opened up, but still no word regarding Apply Texas. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who hasn't received this email.
Good luck, everyone! Hope to see you in the Spring.

Me too! Ah, I’ll be following this thread, because I’m hoping to get added from the waitlist too!

Has anyone started a FB page for the Spring 2021 2nd Degree BSN Round Rock Campus cohort?
Good luck to those of you still on the waitlist! I know this has been an anxiety-filled process.
I pray this happens for me too, congratulations!

It's around $25,000.. the tuition has been anywhere from $4500-6500 a semester, depending on how many hours (like Summer costs less because its fewer hours). The additional $3k is the cost of scrubs, parking, books, review materials, licensure exams, drug screens, and odd fees like that!
I second that! I’m a first semester 2nd Degree BSN student and it’s about $22k in tuition for the entire program— plus more for books, scrubs, medical equipment. This past semester was a little over $6k, but that’s because it’s 17 credits. Summer is 12 credits, Fall is 17 credits, and next Spring will be 15 credits, so the tuition will fluctuate accordingly.
@Kelsy511 and @mgmaybury thank you!!
Between clinicals, classes, and studying, about how many hours does a student put in a week for this program? I'm aware that it is at least 40. Does it go over 60 hours a week? I was supposed to apply to a 12 month program but students put in around 60-80 hours. I simply think I could have a psychological break down if I do 80 hours each week so I decided not to go for a BSN 12 month program.
Finally, I live in downtown Austin. Are students expected to be on campus and complete clinicals in RR all 5 days of the week? I was hoping I could do clinicals in Dell Childrens which is near downtown but someone told me I don't get to choose where I complete my clinicals. (I'm aware you might not be able to answer this question, that's OK). ?
The program is definitely intense, but not 80 hours a week. Many of our cohort are either caregivers or have part-time jobs and are doing fine with it. You will have class on Monday and Tuesday typically plus an online class. The rest of the time is reserved for clinical, but you don't have clinical scheduled all of those days. It's typically 1 to 2 days a week.
The first semester, clinical is in the lab on campus and after that, it will be in various hospitals mostly in the Round Rock area. You definitely cannot choose where you have your clinical rotations, and you will only get a couple days at Dell with your Peds rotation. I don't think any program would let you choose your clinical locations since the type of floors you're on goes along with what class you are taking. We also had a lot of virtual clinical through Vsims and a smattering of lab days throughout each semester to practice with the mannequins and simulated patients (actors).
I live near downtown, and it only takes me about 20/25 minutes to get to campus, so I don't see that as a huge impediment.

The costs are already adding up for titers, physical, background checks, scrubs, polos, and stethoscope. I looked up the books for the first term and there are so many and even used are so expensive. Anyone planning on waiting for the first week of classes to buy books?
