Terminated because of my Attention Deficit Disorder

Nurses General Nursing

Just needed to vent a little. What a rough day today, I was terminated today because of may ADD. I made this clear with the DON when she was terminating me if it was based on my work performance and she said Yes. I have just recently been diagnosed and started on meds and still trying to find the right dosage. She is aware of the diagnosis and I reminded her of this again.

I am upset and hurt and she was not willing to work with me on this until I got my meds straigthen out. She has said before how I am such a strong nurse and I can do the job but I just need to be more organzied and have better time mangament. Now she does not want to work with me on this.

Thanks for listening.

Have you ever thought about working in an ER? I know several nurses with ADD that thrive in the ER environment.

Good luck with your situation.

Peace

I would love to work in the ER but the hospitals here only hire RN's so that is not an option at this time. Someday I hope to work in the ER.

It might be worth your while to seek out the advice of an attorney who knows disability law.

My doctor actually told me to do this and I mostly likely will. She will provide any documents needed because I have been diagnosed and have been being seen for this.

How long have you been working there? Are you within your 90 days? Have you been through due process (have been counseled before)?

I have been there a year this past Dec. To make a long story shorter, at my annual review they put me on a termination plan based on my performance. Time mangaement & organization, being negative towards others, and some others but all that points towards the ADD. Just prior to this review I was diagnosed with ADD. I had been seeing my doctor since Nov. about getting in trouble for punching out late and not staying on task. Well I finally got the diagnoses on Feb 20th. My review was March 5 and my termination plan was for 60 plans, well they terminated me today. My doctor has seen my review and I talked to them today and she suggested I get a lawyer and she will back me up with any info I need.

Most definately get an attorney and file for unemployment. I too am ADD but did manage to function (very stressing) without to much difficulty until i started meds and noticed how much less stress i could have been having.

I was managing to function fine until this job which was my first 2nd shift job and prior to this I worked 3rd shift. My first 7 to 8 months was fine like I mentioned before and something happened and I don't know what and was constantly getting called into the office. I would get out late but I worked the medicare hall and it was crazy all the time. I viewed it as my residents came first and my charting came last. I needed to keep them safe if and constant alarms were going off and when I only had one CENA on the floor when the other was on break then it leaves me to get the alarms. But then there was also constant admissions and managment doesn not help with any of the admission. They can see you can drowning in paperwork and getting behind and they still will not help. THey smile and say bye have a nice night.

I plan on filing for unemployment and talking to an attorney. Jobs are hard to fine around here right now unless I want to drive 45 mintues away. I hate driving that far away to work but I will if I have too.

I'd get a lawyer, and file with the EEO and the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) and go to the local paper.

I advised by a friends lawyer that lives in another town couple hours away to file a complaint with the department of Civil Rights. Is that either of these? Sorry to sound stupid I have never dealt with something like this before.

I need to talk to the owner of the Nursing home before anything would go into any papers. This is private owned and the owner is the admin and he is there everyday. He probably doesn't know anything about this because he lets the DON handle all nursing things and he stays out of it. I did not want to go to him before this because it would cause every bit more reason for her to find a reason to fire me by going over her head.

We have an attorney service through my husbands employer that we pay a couple dollars a month for to handle things like this. We knew it would come in handle some day for only paying a couple of dollars a month for.
