Does everyone get a temporary permit in the mail? Is that required to work b/c my nurse recruiter told me I could start working as soon as my permit came in the mail...........I asked her, how do I apply for it, she said that you dont, that it would be mailed to me............I was like...what? Does a permit come from your state board of nursing or from the hospital? Does anyone else have permits?

Your school should send your transcript to the BON shortly after graduation and the BON will send you a permit. It doesn't usually take very long to get, assumming everything is in order with your transcript and background.

Check with your state BON, as every state's requirements are different, like the above poster I live in PA and we had to fill out paperwork, the school had to fill out paperwork and I had to send $$$ in order to get it. I wouldn't take anyone's word for it that it will just come in the mail, you may be waiting a long time!!

I am in WI and we had to apply for a temporary license. Also, in WI we cannot function as a graduate LPN doing nursing cares until we receive our temporary license from the SBON and our employer approves it.

Here in NY, a graduate must apply for the permit using the same form as the license application, plus send in $35. There is also a form that your employer will complete; you cannot work anywhere as a graduate nurse without this permit. The permit is only temporary, designed to hold you over for a bit until you take the state boards. Depending on the facility that's "sponsoring" you, it might be for just a couple of months, or many months. The local hospitals here allow a grad with a permit 90 days to get the licensing exam completed (and passed).

Here in Pennsylvania, we were allowed to begin working with our Temporary Permits as soon as they were posted online at our department of state website and I just had to show my employer my actual permit once I received it in the mail.

in tx we don't get a temporary "paper" license anymore. the tx bne posts the gvn and gn licenses online. that's where out employers have to go to check them.
