Often it depends on where you live, how long the check will take.
I know that it used to take longer to get it done by the Edmonton City Police. If you crossed town to St. Albert and paid the RCMP detachment a bit more cash, they processed it faster (smaller population base).
Could you check out another municipality for their police service to do it?
Because without the background check, you can't work in the system.
I think if you live in the city, you have to get it from the city police, which can take awhile. Those of us living in areas where there are RCMP are lucky because we can have it done in a much shorter period of time. Some of my classmates ran into this problem last semester because they didn't have their record check from the Edmonton city police back before one of our clinical rotations started. they tried to go the RCMP stations in the Edmonton area, and were told they had to get it in the city. They ended up having to beg to get their checks processed faster.
If you go to Peel Police if you're in Toronto, they will take 3-4 weeks to process a vulnerable sector check which is much faster than any of the other sites in and around the GTA. That's what a few of us did. I know that the main headquarters in Toronto usually takes forever (40 College), as in 2-3 months.
You could also call around and inquire about wait times. However, most employers will not allow you to start work without it, so you may need to postpone your start date. Depends where you live and how busy they are.

Hey guys I just have a question about getting a temporary licence. I just graduated my BSN program and I've been offered a job this week and they require a temporary licence and a recent criminal reference check. I went to get my criminal reference check vulnerable sector because that is what the hospital requires and they said it will tale 4 weeks.
Now my job is suppose to start on June 10th which doesn't leave me enough time to get my temporary licence.. I;m wondering if I should go bay to the police station and request a non vulnerable sector reference check and hopefully that takes less time?
Any suggestions would be great
