Telemetry for New Grad?

Hi everyone- I was wondering what you think of a new grad starting off in telemetry? Would it be good experience? Thanks a lot!!!!

I started on a telemetry unit as a new grad. It has been a great experience. There is much to learn, and a bit of advice is don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. I have been an RN for a little over a year now and am still loving telemetry! You can do it!

I started out as a new grad in tele as well. I loved it so much that I'm still doing it 4 years later. Learning the ins and outs of cardiac rhythms was and still is fascinating to me, so I didn't have a hard time picking it all up right out of school.

I started out in tele also. Great place to learn! Very fast paced though.

Me too! I've been on a progressive care unit for about 9 months now and I love it! You learn an amazing amount of stuff your first few months out. Good luck!

I started in Tele 6 months ago and absolutely LOVE it!! It was tough at first, but everyday I feel more confident. Learning the rhythms, treatments, etc. is great knowledge to have, and, if you're worried about not seeing more med/surgy stuff, never fear, you will learn dressing changes, time mangement, etc. I agree with the earlier poster who suggested asking lots of questions...it helps tremendously.

Good luck!

I was a student on a tele unit for 4 years while I was in school and I started on a tele unit after I graduated. There is a lot to learn but it's great experience. After 6 months I started to not enjoy it any more and moved on to cardiac recovery. My tele experience made the transition to critical care a lot smoother.

I too started right out of RN school on a tele unit.It is fast paced and a lot to lear.Iam learning every day.Yes indeed, ask lots of questions. You will soon learn which nurses dont mind sharing the knowledge.

Say you don't get your dream job right off the bat. Tele is your absolute best second choice because it's a perfect stepping-off point to everything else. Suppose the next time you apply for something, you run into one of those managers who feels every nurse needs a year of med/surg before she'll hire 'em on. There ya go. Or suppose you want to go to critical care. A year of dealing with cardiac issues will definitely make you look like a shorter orientation than a straight med/surg applicant. And of course if what you wanted in the first place was open heart, CCU or the cath lab, go to the head of the line.

Hi everybody
