TEAS Test advice (How to score in the 90%'s)

I currently have an B.S. in another area, and I decided to take the pre-reqs for nursing (BSN). In fact I am going to be in last semester of taking nursing pre-req classes in the fall. I began studying for the TEAS 2 weeks ago. So far I have just reviewed the reading comprehension and the math. I mainly used the ATI guide, but also the "Ace the TEAS Test" (Which is a bit helpful).

My goal is to get in the 90's. I want to be as competitive as possible because we all know that nursing admissions are in fact quite competitive. I am looking for other books, online programs to utilize. I do have the McGraw-Hill's 5 Practice test, however I find the questions easier than the ATI guide. I'm quite disappointed. I also do not want to purchase the online practice test of the ATI. I don't feel the need to pay $40+ for simply one practice test, plus I heard its harder than the actual exam. A lot of the "Nursing School Entrance Exams" don't cover the topics covered in the TEAS. I am also a bit slower in the reading comprehension compared to the math. I really wanted a source that would cover the reading comprehension topics throughly.

I was considering Benchprep. Didn't know what you guys would recommend.

I agree that raising your english and grammar would be pretty doable if you really put in study time. The review books explain the subject, verb, pronoun, adjectives etc very well. That is something you should know. I think the key to math is reviewing % and fractions...and ratios. (I didnt do awesome but still scored 87%...but I only missed one on every practice test) Science for me was learning DKPCOFGS domain kingdom phylum..etc. Cell structures, mitosis meiosis, generalities of anatomy and functions, DNA & RNA was big. I did study DNA and RNA mainly from that ati book and it was a huge help. phenotypes and genotypes homogenius etc. I think the ATI book was especially helpful for that. Reading is reading. I mainly studied the differences between what a theme was, what the main idea was etc...but I didnt find those questions on the my version. But the questions seemed far more difficult than the ones in the ati book (my opinion) I think they would be closer to the McGraw hill book.

I ended up paying the money for the online practice and if I remember right I think it included two practice tests. I did think it was helpful but I don't think it was 100% necessary. I did find the ATI guide to be very similar to the actual test. I took the test twice, the first without studying and the second using the guide. I was able to increase my score by 10%, which I was definitely happy about. Good luck!

I just got home from taking my test today! I felt like it was harder then the ATI book for some reason but it was very similar. I found the question in the mcgraw hill 5 tests was a help in addition to the ATI book...but I focused more on the actual practice tests and not so much on the practice problems. Looking back in the book, the practice problems are pretty similar in the ATI book to the test.

I scored a 90.7 adjusted individual score which was 99 national. I studied when I could over the past few weeks but took about 3 practice tests this week.

Congratulations, how was science and reading? I am doing the practice test on the mackgraw hill and the ATI book, but I only score 70%... I am worry about it. Can you please give me an advice thank you?

Hi there! If you're using those resources and still not getting the results you would like to see, I would recommend using even more resources.

I struggled with Science, and even with studying I was only about to get my score up to 75% (but that was up from 58% on the first go around). That was my weakest area because I didn't take Chemistry or Micro before taking the TEAS. I was able to raise my Reading score up from an 83% to an 88%, which I was happy about also. My math stayed the same at a 90%, but that's not usually an area I struggle with. My Language went from a 73% to an 87%. I went from 74% to 84%, which was very competitive in my program.

There are free resources online that I think are great, especially just to do question after question (which really helps me, as opposed to just reading information). TEAS® Exam Practice Questions There are practice tests that cover every aspect of the TEAS and free videos to watch.

Good luck!

Got a 92...Did lots and lots and lots of practice tests(same in nursing school-do lots and lots and lots of NCLEX practice questions and you will pass)....what I realized though-at least in my program-that all the hype about a high TEAS test "may" help you, but there are plenty of people that get in with scores in the 70's!!! It depends on the admissions. Besides once you are in, the score will not matter to anybody but you. Employers etc...certainly will not care one iota! Good Luck!

Thank you for your response. My big concern is science because taking the practice test on the macgraw hill I only scored 70% and most of the time is because physics questions, that's why I want to know if there are many questions like that on the real test. I am doing good in math and grammar, but I need to improve more. Reading is also one of my concerns because I am a slow reader. But I am going to use the resource that you just sent me. 🙂

Thank you for your responses.

I just began to study for the science, and I'm starting to get quite worried. I am overwhelmed by it all. The only subject I can get real confidence on (once I review that part) is definitely the Chemistry. That's because I am finishing up with Chemistry 2 course at my university. I want to take my time in studying because 1) I am in no real rush, I need these scores by February and 2) I know there's a lot of Science questions on the exam (most compared to the other sections). Any recommendations for studying for the Science portion?

I actually have a question... are we alllowed to use calculators or do have to figure stuff out manually? I am going to take the TEAS V for Garnett. Just wondering what i am in for. Thanks!

Thanks! My goal is to get into ABSN programs around my local universities. I've had a couple friends that were rejected (multiple times), so I want to make sure I've done everything in my power to be admitted.

And no we are not allowed to use calculators. I wonder if the Chemistry portion will be basic enough where calculators aren't necessary....

You won't need a calculator for the science portion. The questions are mostly conceptual and fairly basic.
