Hello everyone! I have submitted my application for TCU's Accelerated BSN program. I am getting ready to take the HESI A2 next week and my file will be 100% complete. I have been checking allnurses.com frequently to see if there are any other TCU 2012 hopefuls, but haven't come across anyone yet! Are you out there?? If so, lets start talking!! :)
A little about me...I have been working as a medical sales representative for close to 10 years. I have worked in pharma, device, disposables, biotech, services, and specialty pharmacy. Throughout the years, my love for the medical industry has only increased until one day I decided to take the plunge and start my pre-requisites. Now with them completed, I am looking into TCU (first choice), El Centro (2nd choice, only have one additional pre-req to take) and UTA (still have 6, yes, 6 pre-requisites to take and doubtful I will be able to apply by for the Fall 2012 start class, perhaps the spring 2013). I live in Lantana (outside of Flower Mound) so I will be commuting each day to the school I get accepted to (fingers crossed).
So that's my story! What is yours??
I think quite a few daycares will do after school for around $50 - $80 a week (at least that is the price around here). They will pick them up from school, give them a snack, and do activities until closing time at the daycare. If you cannot afford it, you should try CCMS for care. I have a 4 year old so I have been doing a lot of research about this. Hopefully this helped a little!
Congratulations all! I have been reading your comments and smiled the whole way through when I thought back to how we were all in your shoes last year - excited, scared, worried but happy. Just a few pointers that I wish someone had told me when I started the program last year:
Try and get the Fundamentals of Nursing book ASAP - call ***** at the nursing office and ask her about the book. It should be the same (maybe new edition from last year) and start reading ALL of it now. You will have an extremely intensive 2 week program where you will be asked to read anywhere from 8-10 chapters every 2-3 days with an NCLEX style exam. We were tested about every 3 days. They do cram an entire semester into 2 weeks. You will be tested constantly. Do not focus on the pathophysiology of the chapters but on how the body responds - What would the nurse expect to see with the patient? Do with the patient? When would the doctor need to be notified? Those are NCLEX questions - it will not be like your A&P classes because they expect you to understand some of the patho already.
Since you have a group of people here that seem to know each other already maybe you all can break up the book into sections and each outline the chapters now for study. Just remember to focus on the ABC's - airway, breathing and circulation because if the patient isn't breathing then that is your first priority.
Your clinical groups will be broken down alphabetically by last name into 7-8 people per group or at least ours was/still is. If there is an absolute day of the week including weekends that you know you will not be able to be at a hospital between 6am - 4pm then let them know now since they are assigning groups to hospitals. When you pick a patient the night before plan on several hours of preclinical paperwork (yes, I wrote hours). When you do your preclinical paperwork try to do the best that you can because as soon as you start to show competency they will lessen the paperwork load.
Buy a box of gloves from CVS (or wherever) and plastic syringes from children's medications and have them handy for your first summer when you will be mastering all of your lab work. This worked for me as I was home practicing drug administration. I used the syringe from my son's meds to practice the skills. They will test you on the exact order of handwashing, gloving, med administration, etc and there are some skill mastery's that require you to change gloves several times during the test - I found actually having a box of gloves to practice with at home helped me when I took the skills test.
I could go on and on I guess and I have paperwork to complete for the morning. It will be an exciting time and do not let the stress get to you. I wish you all luck!
