Hello everyone! I have submitted my application for TCU's Accelerated BSN program. I am getting ready to take the HESI A2 next week and my file will be 100% complete. I have been checking allnurses.com frequently to see if there are any other TCU 2012 hopefuls, but haven't come across anyone yet! Are you out there?? If so, lets start talking!! :)
A little about me...I have been working as a medical sales representative for close to 10 years. I have worked in pharma, device, disposables, biotech, services, and specialty pharmacy. Throughout the years, my love for the medical industry has only increased until one day I decided to take the plunge and start my pre-requisites. Now with them completed, I am looking into TCU (first choice), El Centro (2nd choice, only have one additional pre-req to take) and UTA (still have 6, yes, 6 pre-requisites to take and doubtful I will be able to apply by for the Fall 2012 start class, perhaps the spring 2013). I live in Lantana (outside of Flower Mound) so I will be commuting each day to the school I get accepted to (fingers crossed).
So that's my story! What is yours??
I paid my deposits today:D I also stopped by Dorothy’s and looked at prices-- scrubs range anywhere between $40-$60 (depending on brand) the offer hemming/alteration services for $6.50. The patches are $3/each. For special orders on scrubs, these may make anywhere between 10-12 business days.
They also have shoes but only a limited number are plain white (as required by TCU).
FYI- this is the information provided in the 2011-2012 TCU Student Handbook:
In a clinical facility requiring a uniform:
*Dark purple scrubs with an emblem patch from the nursing program on the left upper sleeve and white shoes. Lavender or lilac colors are NOT suitable. The uniform may be a purple scrub dress or scrub top and pants. The scrub top must have a modest neckline. A solid white shirt may be worn underneath if desired. The top may be tucked in or left untucked from the pants. The scrub pants must extend to the ankle and may be straight legged or have knit cuff. Hem of scrub pant must be at least 1" from the floor. Scrub pants must be loose fitting enough to allow for comfortable bending and squatting.
*The shoes must be primarily white, closed toe, closed heel, leather and clean. No clogs. Shoes must be clean, comfortable and quiet. Socks or hose should be worn. Socks may be white or purple.
Hopes this helps:)
If anyone has important questions regarding admission requirements and/or curriculum, please call TCU and ask for a nursing academic advisor. Also, I have seen that several people in this post have mentioned a certain person's name (TCU staff). This is a friendly reminder to not name names on this site....allnurses.com will get you! And, the nursing staff at TCU probably doesn't appreciate it either, although I do not in any way speak for them....just assuming (if it were me, ya know?) If you have academic/admission/other important questions regarding the program, I would suggest that you set up an in-person or on-phone meeting with a nursing academic advisor.
However, if you would like to know about past or current student experiences, let us know!
Sorry to be harsh, but that is the reality of the internet these days...
Not harsh at all, Shiner. It's a good reminder to us all that this is a public forum and we should be careful how we discuss things. :)
I don't know about anyone else in here, but I'm starting to get pretty nervous and excited. I'm sure the time between now and our orientation will go by in a snap, but I am so anxious to get started just so I can stop worrying about what it will be like!
Shiner50: Quick question for you. How many pairs of scrubs should we get? Some of us have been discussing the frequency of when we wear them. Could you shed some light? Also, a nursing friend of mine advised to get two pairs of shoes. One for when we work in the hospital setting and another for more of "classroom" environment. Do you feel that's necessary?
Thanks for all your insight!! :)

BLS course: I was working to coordinate a class for us in a centralized area through the fire department. Unfortunately, I was unable to get 6 people to do the class. So, it might be best for us to coordinate it on our own. I wanted to let everyone know so you weren't waiting on me. I apologize for any inconvenience. If anyone needs information on places that do provide the BLS course, several people have posted options and I would be more than happy to pass on my contacts. Again, I apologize to anyone who was counting on me to coordinate the course.
On a lighter note, I still think it would be fun to get together and meet prior to our orientation. Let's throw out some ideas, times, locations! Like many of you, I am anxious to meet all of you and to get started!!
Have a great rest of your week!!
If I were you, I wouldn't buy more than 2 pairs of scrubs for now. You can always buy more if you think you need to. Regarding the two pairs of shoes... you definitely don't need more than 1 pair of white shoes. We only wear white shoes to lab (which is only the first summer) and to the hospital. We can wear whatever we want to lecture.
TCU would prefer all leather b/c the leather is more likely to keep a needle from going through you shoe if you were to drop one. Also, if you were to get blood or other bodily fluids on your shoes, leather is easier to clean. You may never get that stuff out of mesh unless you bleach it. Your shoes don't have to be solid leather (no one has ever checked our shoes), but they should to be durable, easy to clean, and comfortable! I've seen just about every brand of tennis shoe represented in our class. Some people, though, have elected to buy solid rubber shoes (like Crocks, but with a full heel and no holes). Those would be good, but they are pricey..I think over $100. I'm not a white shoe person, so I didn't want to spend that much money on shoes I would only be wearing with my purple scrubs.
