Aloha Hawaii Nurses,
Can you tell me what is your hospital using for an IV catheter? Does any one have a catheter you really like. We are using the Protect, I hate it. Looking forward to hearing from any of you!

Mahalo for the thread...Unfortunately my search for a new grad nursing position here in Honolulu has rendered nothing... I have tried everything!!!
I moved here after grad 2007 from a BSN program in Tennessee. I was just offered a job in a level I ER/trauma unit back in TN and moving back for a while to get some experience. I hate to leave but got to go where there is work...I love my house and the islands, but the job market is not working out for me at least...
Aloha and good luck to everyone!
Question: Anyone know of ACLS classes available coming up in March?!?!

I believe Straub has a 2 day ACLS provider class in March. It may already be full and of course, preference will be given to HPH employees. Can't hurt to give them (Nursing Ed) a call and see.

aloha~i took acls with amr as a new grad in aug 06, and it is not that bad. as mentioned in aother post, know your drugs/dosage and the arrhythmias. a great website that is free and helps greatly with the rhythms is skillstat.com.......when you are there go to tools and play around. it covers the major rhythms that you will need to know and is pretty cool. check out the website, study the book for a week or so, and you will do great! also, make sure that you know whether the person is symptomatic/asymptomatic with their rhythm because the treatment can be different. keep us posted on how you did...

New grads are having somewhat of a difficult time getting jobs...I am sure out of towners will have a harder time.
Oahu, is the larger populated state and we have the most hospitals but the hospitals are saturated with new grads and experienced nurses who have 2 or more jobs...so there is no positions available. even queens who diligently hire nwe grads are on a nurse hiring freeze.
I say stay were you are and try to find a job.

I have to say that if someone wants to relocate to Oahu and is a new graduate nurse they should get at least two years experience wherever they are and THEN move to Oahu.
We have so many new grads here that it is becoming dangerous. Cocky new grads, so few resource people. It is so tiring for the experienced nurses.
Years ago it was unheard of for new grads to start out in ICU. Now it seems they are being hired by the truckload.
The experienced nurses are expected to pick up the slack and precept the new hires. Sometimes the new grads are NOT appropriate for ICU. IMO they should get some floor experience first.
But this is what is happening and it is scary, IMO.

You are right. I was really surprised that in the last two EDs I was hired at (one on the mainland, one here on O`ahu) the directors made it known that I would be a resource person for the "younger nurses." Needless to say my orientation to the new unit was short and sweet....
I have to say, and no insult intended, that I wish more of our "resource people" were local. Many of our local nurses have gone elsewhere for more money and sadly, the mainland nurses, althought they mean well and in general they are okay, are no substitute for our homegrown guys and gals.
The local families know the difference and appreciate the local touch. Mainlanders make so many mistakes in dealing with our people. I really want to scream sometimes when I see what happens. I have to say the worst offenders are from the southern part of the country. I have seen such insulting behaviior from them. It is shocking and embarrassing. During the last strike many of the scabs were from the Southeast part of the country and some stayed on after the strike. They were horrible.
We appreciate the knowledge that the mainland nurses bring but we often are put off by their attitudes. Sorry....especially Northshore because I think you mean well but this is the way it is.
