taking the TEAS soon...

Nursing Students TEAS

Published

Hello :)

I am applying to Sumner college in Portland, OR for their Associate of Applied Science Degree in Registered Nursing. Everything is looking really good and all I need to do to be accepted now is pass the TEAS V exam. I plan on going out this week and buying some study materials, I plan to take the TEAS at the end of May. Any suggestions on how/what to study. Thanks in advance!!

Thats awesome that we are both aiming for the same start date. We just need to study our butts off to do well on the TEAS. There are some practice tests online that you should look at. That way you get a feel for the test and the layout.

I am thinking of doing the AM classes as well...

Let me know if you hear of anything else, and I will do the same. Its great being able to talk to someone that is interested in the same program and school as I am :)

Well I hope we both get in and yeah im taking advantage of every minute i can to study.

Oh really? which ones?

here is the one I've been looking at for now

Rader's PHYSICS 4 KIDS.COM

It has other links to math and all. Once i get trough all these examples and teachings im going to read up on the TEAS V book and i have another book but i cant recall the name of it.

Yeah i think AM will work out for a part time job and to be wide awake for school!.

Sure will. Oh and since youve taken the exam before, what should i be more prepared for?

Yes, keeping my fingers crossed for both of us :)

That website looks great. Also try khanacademy.org this website has a lot of great info! It really goes in detail and in depth of many subjects so you can really understand them. Just type a subject into the search toolbar, for example mitosis.

Moring will hopefully allow me to get a part time job in the evenings and I can still have time to spend with my hunny :) even if its just him seeing me study. hahaha.

Prepare to only have about a minute on a half on each question on the TEAS. Dont leave any answers blank...its better to guess then to leave one blank. Every section is timed so lets say then give you 40 min for the math...if you finish the math in 30 minutes take the other 10 minutes to review the section and make sure you are satisfied with your answers, and then submit it once you go over it. but make sure to submit it before time runs out :) freshen up on your basic math, multiplication, long division, fractions...you cant use a calculator, all you get is a paper and pencil :)

Some of the passages in the reading section can be verrrrryyyy long, it helped me reading the questions first and then reading the passage, that way I knew what I was looking for.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, science is all over the place...just freshen up on the basics...meiosis, mitosis, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, RNA, DNA, balancing chemical equations, know how to read a periodic table of elements...i know it might seem overwhelming but use the books and the website i gave you...its so good at explaining these things to you...

For the writing section know how to identify this there, from this their, and this theyre...lol. Know how to properly use semicolons, commas, the basics.

I know this seems like a lot but if you study ahead of time, utilize your books and the websites you will do great...last time I did fairly well on the TEAS and didnt study that much. The teas score wont transfer to this school so they want me to take them over, even though I know the layout on the test I am still nervous because the questions change, its not like theyre going to ask me the same things...

I hope that helps, sorry my last reply is so small...it wouldnt let me change the size. lol.

:yelclap: Oh please dont worry about the size. and i feel sooo much better knowing what im getting into. Thank you soo much!!

I added the website to my favorites, this way i wont forget ;).

Ha! im sure even if its just watching you study he will be more than happy to spend some time by your side, he can help you do some flash cards! I'll have to do part time plus full time mom.. If that doesnt go well my hubby will have to do all the working while i do my schooling ...lol

There & Their? whats the difference?!..

lol im joking.. I printed out the little section of what you mentioned to focus on, just because im so nervous and i really want to do well :specs:...

You would be very lucky if you did! I'm sure you will do very well, It will be a breeze for you:nurse:.

Oh and my cuddy works as a medical asst. She hasnt been in the field very long but i know that shes found jobs fairly easy. She started off at a physicians office and nows works at Emanual Hospitol (with about less than a year of experience). Im sure you will be able to find something that will work out with your schedule.

Yes, definitely hang on to that website, its a great study tool.

And yes, I'm hoping to get a job as a medical assistant, even if its just on the weekends, maybe a few nights a week. Props to all the nursing students who have to work full time...idk if I could do it. I am so blessed to have a great boyfriend (pretty much hubby, lol, we have been together 6 years, almost 3 of those living together) who will be there to give me the support I need. This is going to be a tough few years but just think of where we will be when we are done :)

so much to look forward to!!

I am also interested in the RN program at Sumner. I contacted them today and they said there is no information they can give me about when the classes are going to start, or how to begin applying. What have you heard about it, and have you done the essays yet? I'm hoping that they will be able to start classes for it soon.! Thanks!

Hello :)

If your not good at math, than you'll need to brush up on that. I've used "Basic math and Pre algebra for dummies!" Even bought the workbook! Its a GREAT REFRESHER! Magraw's book of course helped me as well. I think the hardest part of the exam is the SCIENCE. Because no matter how hard you study, That section was unpredictable! I think I got 3 anatomy questions at the most and the rest were about mitosis, atoms... I was saying to myself..uhm did I miss this?? Lol. It was tough. I passed the exam, and got in the school that I applied for but if I had to do it all over again, I would have tried "chemistry for dummies" or something. The science section is so crazy that some schools don't even grade that! LoL. And the biggest tip is no more than 1-2min per question. Or you will run out of time. I can't believe how fast 4 hours flew by. And if you do, then don't leave one question blank! GUESS.

I don't want to scare you though, I just want you to be aware. If you can do really well in English, Reading, and Math, and just "okay" in Science then you'll PASS THE EXAM. Lol. I'm one of those people that did "okay" in Science, and did very well on all other areas. What can I say? I got in! Just don't overwhelm yourself!

Sumner Program has recently been approved by the OSBN and they are currently waiting approval from the ODA (allows them to give out degrees). They have been waiting for approval for a few months now. I was getting pretty impatient so I actually contacted ODA myselft last week and was told they were APPROVED! :) They said they are in the process of sending the formal approval letter to the school which takes about 2 weeks. So I am thinking that the school will receive the approval by next week. As soon as thats available to them they can start scheduling interested students to take the TEAS exam. I am currently studying for the exam. After you take the exam then they give you the essay choices when you meet with them.

Where are you located? I know that the program will be offered twice a year and they will have both morning and afternoon classes. I was told by an advisor at the school that they are building a new campus for the new RN program which will be great, I guess its going to be by the Airport, I was given the street name, I cant remember it now.

PM me if youd like! Its nice to be able to talk to students who are interested in the same program/school :)

You got a hold of the ODA? I tried googling their phone number and couldn't find it. If you still have it would you mind PMing it to me? I'd like to hear that they approved them for myself too! I live in Fairview, OR, so not far from the airport. I was recently going to go into a LPN program at Concorde that starts in October, but then I saw this program at Sumner and now I'm holding out for this. I took the TEAS in April and passed, but am going to do some studying to ensure that I get a good grade. I'm not too good with fractions and mathmatics. From what I reaad on their website they send you the applicationi and also the essay questions.

Sorry my computer was freezing so I wasn't able to finish my comment. The advisor I talked to was not helpful at all - he said there was no information available and tried to get me into the LPN program. I've taken classes at community college so I have some transfer credits available. Any idea how much this program will cost, or what the hours will be? I also am curious as to how many people they will be taking, and how many people actually know about it. I hadn't even heard about Sumner until I was looking at this website today and came across your comment. I'd like to be in the afternoon classes because I work nights and would still like to be able to work 2 or 3 nights a week.

I just registered with this site today so I'm unable to PM right away. Any information that you have would be great, and if you have the name and number of an advisor, or that of the ODA that would be great! As I said, the person I talked to was not helpful.

I forgot to ask, are you using a book to study for the TEAS? If so what is it called? I need to pick one up and look over it!
