taking nclex after 8yrs

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Recently decided to take the nclex again after being out of school for 8yrs and failing a few times. Really would like some advice on how to approach studying. Also, what boards of nursing will allow you to still test after being out so long.

Inquire with the state where you wish to obtain a license, most likely where you live and intend to work as a nurse. Since it has been so long, you will be virtually starting over. You might want to consider investing in one of the review courses, such as Kaplan or Hurst, to get yourself jump started, otherwise choose a review book and get to it. Make certain you give yourself enough time when you schedule the test, make a study schedule and stick to it. Good luck.

You can do it. Just have faith and believe. I have been out of school for six years and just took the nclex 7/23 for the first time and pass with 75 questions. If I can do it I know you can because I struggled through nursing school. But being as though nursing is my passion I studied my butt off to pass. So good luck and have faith. I used a lot of different studying materials which drove me crazy lol. But I would definately recommend Kaplan review course and the LaCharity book.

I graduated my BSN degree on 2006 and failed and never took the test after. Now I am back with studying the whole book of Saunders Comprehensive, Hurst review online, Saunders Q&A and PDA by LaCharity. Im taking my test this Aug.

thanks everyone for responding. I'm studying using lacharity and hurst review.

I graduated in 2002 also and am now deciding to retest after 8 years. I am doing Saunders Comprehensive, LaCharity and I am strongly looking at signing up for the Kaplan complete online course.

I am glad I am not the only one out there in this situation. Graduated '99, and had a hard time passing the NCLEX. Then life happened! My husband is in the military, and we moved around alot. Then we were blessed with our 2 kids. I have been a stay at home mom for the past 10 years, and just started working as a nurses aid this past year. I have come to the realization that nursing is still in my heart, and it is what I am suppose to do with my life! Now I just have to conquer my fears of failure, and get to studying like I have never done before! Good luck to all of you!

I came to this post for some reason this morning but didin't know why. I noticed this thread about testing after 8 yrs. PLEASE KNOW YOU CAN DO IT AND U WILL IF YOU HAVE FAITH. I recently passed boards after graduating nursing school in 2001. I failed a few times, got discouraged then i got back on the track to studying. It took me alsmost a year before i felt confident enough to test. I got pregnant(also after 8yrs) in the mist of studying and I have to say that lil angel helped me to get more motivated to get through and study hard. I passed boards with 75 questions after 8 years. I believe that God had a plan all along but I had to submit myself and faith to HIM. BELIEVE, BELIEVE AND BELIEVE that you will pass and YOU WILL!!! Best of luck to all test takers and God Bless.

BTW:I studied Saunders, did the entire CD, EXAM Cram and NCSBN learning extension about 3 times. I also got help from a young lady in Miami who is a nurse she studied with me and helped me immensely. I thank GOD for her inspiration.
