Taking A&P 1 and 2 this summer

Hi everyone! This is my first post in here so any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I am currently getting a BSN in Psychology and after I graduate I hope to get into an accelerated nursing program and get my BSN. I was planning on taking both Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 this summer, but have heard how difficult these courses are. I have about a year of college left so its possible I could take one in the summer and one in the fall I just thought it would be best to knock them out when Im not taking any other courses.

Is it possible to take both A&P 1 and 2 in the summer or is that a death wish? Thanks so much for any advice!

I wouldn't do it. Not unless you've had cellular biology or a related topic already and really learned that information well.

In many of the programs around me you MUST complete and pass A&P1 before taking A&P2. Taking A&P over the summer is doable, taking the 2nd course with out the foundation of the first is not wise. (Unless of course your school offers an A-term, B-term set up and you are completing all of A&P 1 before A&P2, in which case it will be very intensive, but survivable if you can devote all of your time to class.)

I don't believe you can take them at the same time, but if not take micro and A&P1. Personally I don't think it is a good idea. I got A's in both, but took them one at a time and not in a shortened summer session. Unless your college is different and your semester is a "normal" one I think it would be too much. Or at least I don't think I could have pulled off A's in your situation. B's and C's maybe, but that is what I think I could manage; you may be different.

Thanks for all of your advice so far! My school offers the option to take A&P 1 for summer session 1 and A&P 2 for summer session 2. I was thinking it might be better for me to take them in the summer when I can devote my time to one class vs the regular school year when I'm taking 4 other classes. However, I know it will be very fast paced and intensive which worries me as I'm aiming for an A in both of these courses.

Not just for the grade, but you want to be sure to learn the info because you're going to need to be able to recall it for your nursing classes. I would save summer classes for gen eds if it's not necessary to do your sciences then because summer classes really do need to leave out some info that's covered in the regular terms.

Maybe in some schools but not at my school. I'm taking 8 week condensed versions of A&P I and A&P II and we are covering the entire book between the two classes. I've completed A&P I and I'm in week 2 of A&P II right now. The tests have covered the vast majority of the material in the book, very little of the material was specifically skipped. Only things I can think of from A&P I were some of the muscles in the forearm and hands/feet and specific names of carpels/some tarsals.

OP if you think you can handle the condensed pace of the classes and actually LEARN and RETAIN the information go for it. If you think you'd simply binge study, absorb the material for the test and promptly forget it then avoid the condensed versions. I think it depends greatly on your science aptitude and ability to retain new information.

Are you taking both A&P 1 and 2 in the 8 weeks or are they both 8 weeks long? Do you feel that the courses are too fast paced?

Each course is 8 weeks long. A&P I was the last spring session and A&P II is the first summer session. They aren't too fast paced for me as my only class but between a full time job, 1.5-2 hour daily commute, and other adult responsibilities studying/homework take up the vast majority of my "free time". But I am going into this with a prior BS in Biology and a strong science background. I've previously learned the "big picture" on most of the material and these classes are teaching me the finer details. So for ME it's not a problem.

I think it could be done assuming that you don't have work. It's going to be taught at a faster pace since it's summer but if you're super focused and determined it can work out. You have to study every day and be ontop of the game.

If you are willing to put the time in, you can do it! I am a TA for anatomy and physiology 1&2. Make quizlets, buy the online access for your textbook (something like Mastering A&P). Go to open labs to study with groups. Ask a lot of questions in class. Most Nursing Programs want to you get really good grades in A&P. If you feel like you would have better results taking them in separate semesters then do that. I did a split session for A&P 1/2. That meant for the first half of fall semester I took A&P 1 and the second half of fall semester A&P 2. I like this better because my class only covered the necessities and most of my class was made up of Pre-nursing students so the professor covered what we really needed to know for Entrance exams and the program in general.

Good Luck! You can do this!!!
