taken the NCLEX

Published

just a quick question- can anybody (say a prospective employer) know if you've already taken the NCLEX?

Probably not. Of course if you pass, they would be able to verify your license on the state's nursing board website. But if someone does NOT pass, I don't see how anyone could find out that an exam attempt was made but was unsuccessful. Just a guess.

Doesn't your temp license expire when your NCLEX results are reported? So then you either have a perm license, or no license, and you have to drop down to unlicensed personnel. I think the info is reported to the state licensing board, and your employer could see it if they looked, i guess...not sure if it could be reported to your employer...

this is a tricky thing--- i know anyone can look to see if i have a license (meaning i passed the NCLEX). i'm just not certain about the circumstances concerning a prospective employer inquiring as to whether i have taken it and failed. if anybody has any input, please feel free to comment.

At some stage the employer will ask to see a license and if you have been working with no license then suspect big big trouble. I doubt prospective employer would be bothered but again may wish to see license or be able to verify you have a license

When I was hired as a new grad, my position was contingent on my passing NCLEX. I could work as a CNA II (I paid for the certification...we were automatically CNA I after so many semesters of NS), but I couldn't work as an RN until I passed NCLEX and had my license.

NC doesn't have a "temporary" license for new grads to work under.

i can't begin work until i pass either --- i just can't imagine telling work that i failed! my start date is in february, & i should know my NCLEX results w/in the next week . . . i'm just biting my nails and playing out all of the "what if's" in my head! have you ever heard of anybody losing a job for not passing the NCLEX?

It shouldn't take but maybe 2-3 days to know your NCLEX results. Good luck!

If you were hired for a licensed position, then I'm sure you'd be out of luck until you passed and had a license (or temporary) in hand.

Sometimes, if a new grad is hired as a grad nurse in between school and passing NCLEX, and the grad fails and has to re-take, that grad nurse may be dropped back a position to patient care tech (or whatever it is in your state) until they pass.

I think in my hospital, they'll keep you as grad nurse after you fail the first time. After the second time, it's back to PCT (and pay too).

Whatever you do, don't try to hide anything concerning this matter from your current/future employer. You'd just be putting them (and your future license) in jeopardy.

Good luck.

thankyou for all of your replies! i just wanted to let you know i PASSED! i never understood how people were so uptight & afraid about this test until my turn came. wow- the last couple of days have been the most nerve-racking days of my life! i'm just glad it's behind me & i can go forward to the next great challenge!
