to take the job or not take the job that is the question

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I am a new grad, ive been working in a big acute rehab throughout nursing school. I just passed my boards and they have a position open that i can slide into. The only thing is 1)i know the in's and out's of the place 2)i hear all the nurses i work with complaining about the place all the time 3) i had my heart set on relocating (which isnt as easy as i thought it would be) 4) i really wanted to start my career out on a med/surg unit 5) ive already been there as an aide for 4 yrs. The job market is a bunch of crap right now and the Job Search isnt going so hot. Am i just being too picky? should i be taking whatever it is i can get? i dont want to pass this up and be stuck with nothing but im not sure how much i want to be there

Specializes in neurology, cardiology, ED.

Take what you can get at this point. You can always stay for a year, and then try applying to the "one year experience required" positions. Since it is still acute care, a lot of what you are doing will apply to any med-surg job, right?

Seriously, the economy is cr*p right now, and you don't want to wait for that perfect job, only to have to compete with next year's new grads to get it!

Specializes in ICU.

In the current job market, offers are few & far between. If you have a job offer, I'd recommend that you take it.

If your heart is set on relocating, you might check out King's Daughters Medical Center (Ashland, KY). They are hiring new grads, which is a lot more than can be said for many other hospitals. If interested, see:

Specializes in Trauma ICU, Peds ICU.

Take what you can get. I'd say (in most cases) not to let the nurses' complaints discourage you. Nurses complain, oftentimes even when they're generally satisfied with their workplace. It's what they do, just like physicians and taking credit.

yeah im gonna take it.... i guess it was just that even though its and acute rehab its still rehab nursing (nothing wrong with that) but people tell me acute hospitals dont respect it much

Specializes in Psych, LTC, Acute Care.

Don't worry! Down the line you will not have a problem getting a job in the hospital. That acute rehab experience will give you great experience. I worked as a LPN for two years in a nursing home and when I got my RN I applied to 3 hospitals and got job offers and they all considered my working in a nursing home an asset. You will be just fine!

Specializes in Oncology, Med-Surg.

I agree with everyone. If you have a current job offer, dont let it go. The economy is tough and if there is an employer that is willing to hire you as a new grad RN now, take the opportunity and and work for at least a year.

I am doing the same thing. I got a job in med-surg just to get my foot in the hospita and get some experience working. I plan to do this for about 1-2 years and hopefully I can specialize in peds or labor and delivery in the future. I also plan to relocate to, I am a Marine wife. So hopefully I will have enough experience by the time I change duty station.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.
