Do you mean ipecac? Meant to induce. Vomiting

They took this off the market...in my state at least

Specializes in NICU, Post-partum.

It is available over the counter in the majority of states.

People need to know that "over the counter" doesn't necessarily mean that you'll find it in the open shelves at your local Walgreens....some OTC's are only available behind the pharmacy counter so that the pharmacist can provide education prior to purchase.

Syrup of Ipecac is STILL used in homes and it is a very critical thing to have.

However, you should NEVER induce vomiting without the advice of a physician or the poison control center.

I agree that it is important for people to understand what "over the counter" means. I think it is great that if pharmacies are still selling it that they are providing education to the people buying it. I hope that education includes all the facts as well as the fact that both the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Association of Poison Control Centers recommend that syrup of ipecac NOT be kept in homes. Apparently, it is rarely useful in treating childhood poisonings., although I know of cases where it was. The FDA was considering a recommendation to make ipecac syrup a prescription-only drug but I don't think they ever made a decision. It is not available in pharmacies in my area - on the shelf or behind the counter. Last year my class reviewed this quite extensively because so many people felt one way or another when the topic of childhood poisoning was covered. Pretty interesting stuff.

Yeah, in a local junior high, some girls were using it to lose weight. We parents got a note about it, recommending we remove it from our home, or at the very least, monitor it like any other drug and make sure to discuss the issue with our children.

...and this is exactly why in some areas, it is not available on the drugstore shelves, but you must get it from a pharmacy.

A pharmacist isn't going to sell it to a 16-year-old kid.

Syrup of Ipecac is used poisonings where the induction of vomiting is not going to do double damage when the swallowed contents come back up ie. bleach.

For a long time, parents were just using it anytime little junior swalled anything and there are kids that were damaged WORSE because of it.
