Syracuse, NY...any jobs for new nurses????

Published

Anyone graduates having trouble finding a nursing job in Syracuse? I'm trying to decide if I want to enter nursing school or not. I'm worried about the job market. How bad is it in Syracuse? I keep reading about horror stories finding jobs in other parts of the country, but how bad is it here in Syracuse? I'm in my early 40's and nursing school would be a complete career change for me. I'm a single parent of teenagers. I don't want to make a mistake by entering a field that has no jobs for newbies. Any advice would be so appreciated, thanks! :heartbeat

Hi....I'm about 45mins east of Syracuse. I've been worried about this too after reading posts on here about new grads not being able to find jobs or it taking months. So I looked into every hospital around here and there's so many jobs in Syracuse....I pray it's like that in 2 years, lol. However....most of them require 1 year experience but there were some that don't. That's what's frustrating....how can you get experience if they won't hire you. But I did read from a new grad here that she applied and got the job even though they said experience required. Sooooooo...I'll cross that bridge when the time comes, I just want to concentrate on school and do good. Don't let the current job market get to you! Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response, CrunchyMama, I really appreciate it. Some of the posts on this website are so negative, I was really getting worried. Best of luck to you with your schooling. I haven't applied yet, I'm still trying to make sure this is the right decision for me. I've ALWAYS wanted to be a nurse and with my current job being "dead end" I'm desperate to get into something new. There's so much to consider before I take the plunge.

You're welcome! I know there's a lot of not so good stuff posted but just think....more often people come to a site to vent frustrations, rarely to post something good. So I'm sure for every vent, there's a few good things happening too. Good luck with your choice!

I work in Syracuse and there are LOTS of jobs for new grads! I know for sure that Crouse Hospital and SUNY Upstate University Hospital hire new grads. There is currently still a nursing shortage here.

Also, I graduated NS last December and everyone in my class who applied for RN positions secured jobs. :)

Thank you so much mixyRN. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear! Would Crouse hire a grad from St. Joe's and vice versa? Or do they stick to hiring their own grads? I still haven't decided if I want to go to Crouse or St. Joe's, maybe I will apply to both and see which one I can get into. Do you know if they have a waiting list?

Thank you for sharing your insight. That's very good to know!

I know that Crouse hires new grads from anywhere, and that if you are a Crouse grad you can pretty much guarantee securing a job at Crouse. I'm a Crouse grad and I did most of my clinicals there, and I work there now. It was a very smooth transition, plus there was a new grad incentive program when I was hired which is $7500 bonus over three years ($2500 per year, first check is after 6 months) and $550 for NCLEX prep and fees.

Not sure what they will be offering in the future though.

I can't speak for St Joe's except to say that most of their grads tend to stay there to work. I have heard mixed reviews about the nurse to patient ratios and the work load over there. I do know that St Joe's was initially my 1st choice for nursing school but when I found out Crouse admits a class in the Spring I chose them so I wouldn't have to wait until Fall to start classes. I can say now that I am SOOOOO glad I chose Crouse! I have heard scary things about Joe's, but then it's only rumors so who knows? I'm not sure about waiting lists for either school but I know Crouse has a points based system now and gets hundreds of applicants for each term. You can check out the website for the school of nursing and download the document which shows how the points are calulated to select applicants. :wink2:

So are they more likely to hire their own grads? I'm going to MVCC and Crouse would be my 1st choice in that area if I can't find a job out here. Years ago I was basically hired on the medsurg floor as a CNA and I really liked it....I was only there for the interview and tour but from what I seen, it was nice.

CrunchyMama,

I would say that Crouse is looking for good nurses, period. My manager just interviewed a candidate who is a community college grad, not sure what school. I am pretty sure they welcome new grads from any school just as long as the references are good and the candidate interviews well.

As a side note, I am very pleased with my orientation process. It was a full 12 weeks and I was definitely ready to be on my own once it was over. I also had 5-6 solid days of education classess mixed into those 12 weeks. It's pretty flexible and they will even allow you to extend orientation if you feel you aren't ready to be on your own.

What goes on during the orientation period? Do you just follow another nurse around or do you only get 1-2 of your own patients? Thanks a lot for your input!
